Is the new (ie, the one that comes with the fr60) any better than the old (like comes w/ the forerunner 50) ?
I have nowhere local I can run to quickly to take a look.
I gather that the old is larger in size. Can anybody give me an idea of how big? Cumbersome?
The only size that comes to mind so far is the nike+ which is rather tiny.
Any since I’m sure somebody will point it out, I don’t really have any interest in the 305 b/c it’s massive, and I like doing indoor running on a track, not on the treadmill. I don’t see any advantage to gps anyhow.
Pretty much the deciding factor b/t the fr60 & the forerunner 50 is the footpod difference.
I just bought an FR60 with this new footpod. I haven’t held it side by side with the Nike+, but I would say that the pod itself is perhaps smaller. It comes with a clip/holder that you place under your laces and then you clip the pod into this carrier above your laces. This entire assembly is perhaps a slightly larger than the Nike+.
As a side note, I just pulled it out of the box and ran a 10k without any calibration… the unit measured 6.27 miles. Assuming that the course distance was accurate (and who knows!), it was only .07 miles off.
The newest Garmin foot pod fits in the Nike + hole in the Nike shoes, so if you’ve seen the Nike+, it’s the same size. The somewhat older Garmin foot pod is bigger and has to go on the shoe laces. The newer one can go on the laces, or in the shoe if you wear the Nike’s. I’d say the new one has no disadvantages, but since the size of the old one isn’t exactly enormous, if you are not a Nike wearer you may not care one way or the other. The new one is cool though, very tiny.
I’ve use both, and there really isn’t a difference in functionality, just in size. However, the FR60 blows the Forerunner 50 away. Key differences:
FR60 has more memory
FR60 displays more lines of info (3 vs. 2), and you can configure multiple displays
FR60 - easier to switch between sports
FR60 - buttons are more ‘logical’
FR60 - autopause
As noted, there’s no difference in overall technical functionality or size.
However, one area of interest is that the old school ones have a little button to turnon/turnoff - as well as the light on top. Whereas the new ones don’t have either a light or place to turnoff/on. That said, I have both and LOVE the new one. It’s so tiny that it doesn’t look funny if you just wear your shoes out and about. Whereas the old one was like having a big old hot dog on your shoe.
In my 310XT review (Accessories section of review, under Foot Pods) I cover the footpod a fair bit and have comparitive pics of the old one and new ones. And then if you scroll down to the gallery of leftover show (about 150 photos), I have a ton more random shots too of them.
I recently got a Forerunner 50 with the footpod. Looking at your pictures, my footpod model is different than either you posted. Mine appears to be an intermediate size between your ‘old style’ and 'new style.
that’s correct. There’s an old one, a newer one, and a new one if that makes sense. The 2 newer ones are basically the same from a functional standpoint, but the newest one is also the smallest one.
Agree with Matt on this one - if you’re trying to decide for a new one - get the newest (smallest) one. It’s just tiny, a touch bit bigger than a quarter. It’s great for travelling as well. I’m at the airport right now with my running shoes on and it’s way better than having the massive ones on my shoes at all times.
Unfortunately, when they went to the newest one (and the one previous), they increased the price a crapton. It used to be reasonable (about $30), now…not so much.
Yeah, agreed with that.
I’d like to get an FR60, but can’t find any used or deals, and with the footpod it’s $200.
Granted the tiny footpod is very nice, and the FR60 gets you an extra line of data vs the Forerunner 50, the old model can be had on amazon for $70 all-in.
Not sure which route to head.
