Garmin extended screen

So my coming out of retirement race is Eagleman in a couple weeks. I have a 945 and a 520 plus on my bike. I’ve experimented with the extended display feature. Do Yall use this for races? Any specific extra settings I should look at. I just calibrate my power meter before the swim and just leave everything on right?

I wear and record the whole race with my 945.

I use my edge to record and display but I discard the file when I’m done.

The extend screen is unnecessary for me. I’ve done it, it’s a step that I don’t need to take.

Do you leave the edge on during the swim? I’m not too worried about battery life but I do at least think about it.

Am I overturning the calibrate power meter thing?

This is exactly what I do. The 945 is for recording data; the Edge 530 is simply a display to use during the bike, which is discarded afterwards.

As for whether to turn off the Edge, I’ve done it both ways and it doesn’t really matter. It has plenty of battery life for a 70.3. But I now leave it off and then turn it on in T1. It’s just a button press; then press the start button right before I hop on the bike.

I leave it on during the swim, and after. The longest race I’ve done in the last 15 years has been a HIM but I know the edge will last much longer.

I do exactly the same. I have a “Race” profile on my 530 that does not time out. I turn it on before the race and then just start it on the bike. Extended display is cool, but I just time it anyway on my 530. Plus, it serves as a backup if I need it, like last week at Chattanooga. I accidentally ended my session on my watch during the bike. So the 530 capture the ride for me. The only thing I lost was T2. (I restarted the watch for the run.)

Seconding what other have said. I have the same Garmin combo and record on both. The only thing I do different is have the 530 start recording when I get to 10k/hr that way it just auto starts for me without having to hit the watch and computer start.

The Extended Display feature doesn’t use the Edge’s GPS, so the Edge’s battery life in this mode will be waay longer than in regular riding mode. Leave it on for the swim.

I have used both the 520 and 530 in a few different IM and 70.3 Disconnect the phone pairing/search option and that will greatly help the battery life. I leave mine on in T1 before heading to the swim start. Have not used the extended display during a race - I tried to use it during a training session or two, and honestly was not a fan.
