Garmin Edge 500 - tabs on back broken - how to mount on bike?

The tabs on the back broke on a ride last week. It fell off the Garmin mount at speed and tumbled down the road and looks a bit bashed up now but still works. It really needs a new case but is long out of warranty So I assume Garmin won’t fix it.
So my question is, has anyone mounted the 500 on their aerobars without using the tabs? Ideally I’d like it on my left hand aero bar just before the end of the bar angles upwards.
I’ve spent about 30mins fiddling around with taping it on using electrical tape but it’s a bit wobbly for my liking, plus I’ll have to redo that every time I need to take it off to charge it.
Thanks.

First off you may want to contact garmin anyway and see what they say.

Otherwise I would take a bit of plastic and cut a round piece with tabs and epoxy it to the back, then it could fit the standard mount. Or perhaps you could create something that works from the 310 quick release kit.

Good luck,

3M makes a double sided automotive sticky tape. They recommend it when putting emblems back on your car. I used a little square of that stuff on my bike for an older GPS watch that the strap broke off of. Just gotta make sure the surface area is big enough for the adhesive tape to adhere to the bike, not so much the back of the Garmin. Actually used it on a car emblem 7 years ago too… still there!

At Lowe’s/Home Deopot (I believe) I got a roll of industrial strength velcro. Seriously. Very unlikely your 500 would come accidentally unstuck with that stuff.

It’s a very common problem with the 500. Call Garmin. They no it’s a problem. They fixed mine for free.

Thanks guys.
I called Garmin and they said it would be NZ $169 to get a replacement (a refurbished one). They don’t repair then here.
Well, for about $270 I can get a new one from Wiggle.co.uk so not sure that is worth it.
I don’t think glueing a plastic strip across the back (to clip into the mount) would work too well. It’d have to be thin, there isn’t much to glue it to on the garmin (there is still the circular raised part on the back) and the clip mount on the bike has a contoured surface. So I can’t see the glue holding well or the clip engaging well either.

The strong velcro sounds like it’s worth a try. I’ll try and find some and let you know how it goes.

When it happened to mine I used a rubber band to hold it down. Worked for a couple of weeks of training and IMTX this year. I called Garmin after the race and they sent me a replacement for free. I had to send the broken one back though.
