Garmin and Google Earth

I was playing with my Garmin today, and I remember seeing someone post their routes from the Garmin over Google Earth…how is that done?

If you have a training peaks account, you can export the run as a .kml into Google Earth. I think CP WKO will also do the same but I’m not at the computer that has it installed.

You can probably do something similar through Motion Based, but I can’t remember right now.

Motionbased does have the option as well, and it’s pretty easy: upload the activity and go to the page created for it. Under the map on that page is a link “Google Earth” – click it and you can save the kml file for that activity.

I use SportTracks. ‘Export to Google Earth’

Agreed - use SportTracks.

SportTracks

Another vote for motionbased. They are now owned by Garmin and, although you have to pay, it is pretty darn nice. The dot racing is super cool, and the system “extracts” a more detailed set of data about your workout than you view with the software that comes with the GPS (naturally, since you have to buy something additional…).

It’s pretty darn cool though. Recommended.

Actually the free account will even let you do almost everything
.

Go to bones in motion. Upload your activity and export to google earth. You may have to download the google earth software, but everything is free. It is awesome to fly around your route! Enjoy!

I had to subscribe to Goggle Earth Plus ($20 a year) to download my Garmin Edge 305. It was well worth it!

Why’d you have to pay? I just downloaded for free? Did you get an upgraded version?

The upgraded version plotted my routes and did a virtual fly over my tracks. Pretty cool. Also they told me I had to.

Never tried SportTracks, but motionbased works great!

I forgot to mention I am on a Mac…

You don’t need the earth plus if you have another program to off load the garmin tracks to a gpx file.
I use get301tracks.exe been using it for a long time… I too fell into the pay 20 bucks then found out that was just so it would talk to your garmin to download.
So after a year I didn’t pay (it’s 20 bucks a year not one time pay) I upgraded google earth didn’t pay the 20 bucks and I can load gpx files free.
I had get301tracks.exe already…
You download them then I use the gpx file for topofusion and google earth doesn’t cost a cent.
Not sure where I got it but here is a link I found.
Lot’s of good info on yahoo garmin group you can find all sorts of programs and info.
Then you just file open select gpx type and works like a charm.
You don’t have to use a kml file.

Don’t see anything in garmin training center that will export to gpx file but you might check on the garmin group at yahoo for some conversion programs.

I also use a Mac and both Motionbased and Google Earth work fine for me.

I’m using Motionbased now, seems to work well enough for me for the time being…

Thanks!
