The ant+ signal on my stages power meter is weak! I get quite a few dropouts when my watch is on my handlebars but none if my watch is near my bottle cage (in other words I don’t think it’s related to the battery issues). I was hoping to have better luck with its Bluetooth signal.
At my fitting today the shop said the 920 would read the Bluetooth. DC rainmakers post says it will only read the ant+. Can anyone confirm who’s right?
Any other recommendations? I would be fine with just a cycling head unit too if that would work better.
I currently have a suunto ambit 2s which I have no issues with other than this.
The 920 will only receive ANT+ data. It will transmit data over bluetooth to a smartphone. Your shop is wrong. Somebody else might be able to enlighten you as to which, if any, Garmin devices will receive bluetooth data. Not sure that any do though.
Thanks! That’s what I thought but I wasn’t sure if some sort of firmware update changed that recently. I can spend more time looking into it now. I didn’t want to miss the 920 if it would work for me while it is on sale.
None of the Garmin’s can connect to Bluetooth smart sensors. Maybe next generation, but Garmin doesn’t seem to be pushing in that direction.
Garmin owns the company that “owns” the ANT+ specification. I suspect Garmin will not push too hard on BTLE device connectivity, since this is exactly the application for which ANT+ was designed and marketed.
I’ve been able to find the polar m450, v650, v800, and wahoo elemnt. Those seem to be able to read Bluetooth. Anyone have any experience or input on those? Anyone specifically have any input on how stages works with them?
Why don’t you test it on your smartphone for now? Strava app will let you connect Ant+ and/or Bluetooth during a ride/recorded activity. I’ve successfully connected a Stages to my Strava app (albeit never actually started recording data though). Only did this to verify the Stages was working since I bought it used and was checking it in front of the seller (craigslist transaction).
It’s your 920 that doesn’t play nice with Stages though. I was running mine with a Edge 500 on my aero bar closer to the shifters than my handlebars and didn’t have any major dropout issues.

stages works fine with my polar m450
I’ve had my Stages work perfectly over the last 12 moths with my Polar V800.
My Stages doesn’t work properly with a 910 and an Edge 500 on the aero bars stops picking up the signal as soon as I hold the aero bars! I would be interested if anyone has switched from Ant+ to Bluetooth and seen any improvement.
