Garmin 910xt Run Pace

I just received the new Garmin 910xt watch and I have taken it out on a couple runs so far. The run is pace is absolutely horrible, it is all over the place… jumps 1-2 minutes every second.

I have contacted Garmin and they told me there was a software problem with the current pace field and that they are currently working to resolve this.

Just wondering if anyone else is having this same problem and if you heard of a timeline for the firmware update.

Thanks

Yeah… I think a few others have mentioned this issue!

Currently, the instant pace is absolutely useless. Try showing your lap pace and setting your lap distance to .1 to .25 miles. This will give you a much steadier pace. With the complaints that have been sent to Garmin over this issue, I would think they will have a fix out for it soon.

Instant pace is useless w/ any GPS device. For best results, use short laps and lap average pace if you’re that concerned with your current pace.

Yup, me too. I guess when you’ve cornered the market with a product you can afford to release it with a bug that makes itself apparent after about 90 seconds of real world use.

This run pacing issue wasn’t known on dcrainmaker’s review piece?

I don’t think Ray uses instantaneous pace. In all GPS devices, it is known to suck. Same as instantaneous power. It is accurate but useless.

It didn’t suck in the 310XT.

Curious…Do you run on constant rpe, or do you change your effort everytime you look at your watch and see you are 10 seconds slow or 10 seconds fast?. I assume that the importance of instant continuous pace is to constantly change your effort to maintain whatever goal pace.

In the same way that speed on the bike when riding on rpe or power is nice to gauge how you’re performing vs how you’re feeling, it’s nice to look down and spot check pace at a certain rpe. It’s not about adjusting my pace every 10 seconds. Just nice to know how fast I’m going semi-reliably.

Thanks…On the bike what happens that second does not matter to…“me”. Thanks

Which is exactly why ‘average’ pace or ‘lap average’ pace would be significantly more useful than ‘pace.’

I go back and forth. Lately I’ve been using Lap Pace and Avg Pace, tied to whatever my interval sets are. Mostly because I’m usually aiming for a specific target for that set. In that case, a lap pace over 5-7 minutes is more valuable to me than the instant pace. I used to be a full 100% instant pace kinda guy, but have slowly seen the light of the other method - at least with more structured workouts.

That said, I have thrown on the FR910XT on a few workouts with instant pace and just aren’t seeing the same issues as others. Some folks see it, some folks don’t (I hear both sides, trust me). Some folks have had good luck with doing a full reset + 20 minutes sitting outside, then good after that. For me, I see the ‘usual’ pace fluctuations with instant pace - i.e. 7:45, 7:40, 7:45, 7:42, 7:47…

Either way, confirmed with Garmin folks a fix is coming no later than early March, but potentially much earlier. Should have final date story sometime Friday. Just the messenger…

If you setup a workout that uses pace, does it use instantaneous pace to beep at you or average lap pace? Even lap average pace isn’t too great if the GPS ends up being 10% off per mile but you do get a nice “feel” so you’re close when it matters come race day.

I agree, the speed works really well on my 310XT, that is what I use all of the time.

The only issue I have with the speed is when I run under a lot of trees or trail running with a lot of switchbacks.

Well, whether you agree with its usefulness or not, I think we can agree that if Garmin is selling a unit with a “current pace” field, it should probably show you current pace with some shred of reliability.

I do not trust gps for that…regardless of a screen being there

It did/does suck. Just doesn’t deep throat.

I have the 305 and the instant pace works great and i use it. It also has a choice for the amount of smoothing filter to apply

I love my 910XT, haven’t had any noticable problems other than a few gliches with the swim function.
