Garmin 910XT accuracy

Is there a quick fix for 910xt accuracy when running trails in heavily wooded areas? I first thought only the pace was off, but I’ve done 3 times the same short am run (40min) with a range from 4.9mi to 6.3mi (pretty sure it’s somewhere right in the middle).

Using a foot pod for speed/distance should work. Just make sure you have it calibrated properly. Other than that, setting it to every second recording might also help a little.

  1. every second recording
  2. footpod
  3. wait to start till your accuracy is ~10ft.

Otherwise, heavy tree covering will always affect GPS signal, as will cloud cover.
At a recent trail race with lots of trees, people’s watches all read +/- .3 miles over an average of 5.7miles. It seems like yours is further off than that, so try the 3 things above.

It also doesn’t handle sharp turns in the trail well. If you are on tight switchbacks plus tree cover it will be impossible to get an accurate reading. I always take my trail run readings with a grain of salt and compare previous times to see if I’m making progress.

Where do you see your accuracy?

Make sure autopause is not switched on.

You’d have to set it as a data field on one of your screens. I think it’s just “GPS Accuracy” when looking through the field types…

I think you can also see it on the “satellite” page through the menu (the one with all of the bar graphs for satellite strength) once you have a “lock”.
