Garmin 530 Settings

After 5 years away from a Garmin head unit, I’m coming back in with a 530. I searched here and wasn’t able to find what the desired settings are for GPS and power recording…smart, 1 sec., auto-pause-those kind of things. Some of them personal preferences and some that just need to be.

Any advice welcomed!

One second and include zeros for power. I see the autopause as a personal preference. I have it on for the training profile and off for the racing profile.

I’ve put a few of my tips/preferences together on the Edge 530 over on YouTube.

Keep an eye out for the 4.10 firmware that just dropped for it. LOTS of fixes in that update.

Thanks!

Finally got a chance to watch your video. Thanks for that. But, I am super curious about a couple of your preferences…

#4 - Why do you hate auto lap? It defaults to 5 miles (or 8.05 km, which is wonky if you use metric), and I love it-- I use it in races and training to get a quick update on how I am riding at sustained efforts.
#5 - Why do you dislike sharp bends? I rarely get the warnings on normal roads, but I find it incredibly helpful for fast, technical mountain descents. When I get a sharp bend warning on a descent, I know it will be a real meanie and not a normal switchback turn. I plan on this helper for the Nice 70.3 WC descent.

#4 - Autolap on by default means a new (or reset) unit will beep at me for no real reason, indoors and out. I appreciate it’s a function and have used it on occasion. Just not all the time. I’ve always used power to judge efforts. Speed has too many other variables I can’t control.

#5 - If you’re training for an event and don’t know the course well enough that you need to be alerted of a ‘sharp bend’… then it’s time to prepare better. (Yeah, I sound like a grumpy old git… here) Roads I’ve raced on that have technical descents/bends/etc have road signs with speed limits / arrows / warnings. Having something BEEP on my handlebars and taking my attention off the road isn’t ideal. This isn’t what I need when hooking on the limit into a bend I knew was coming.

Both personal preferences on those settings.

Shane, why do you leave the beeping still on? Genuinely curious. I turn it off, as I don’t want to annoy myself nor any other people around me. I feel that doing so allows me to leave autolap on when biking at 1km or 1mi without the bother, which I find useful for 2 things: training analysis and to gauge GPS consistency from day-to-day.

Good question. No idea. It’s always been on. I’ve always left it on.

Between the newer Edges having BT text connection and also defaulting to turn on when plugged in for charging it finally broke me of using the beeping setting on!

My wife agrees… after I was playing around with charging and voice navigation cues last night at 12am!
