Garmin 500 Rattles in its Mount

I have a Garmin 500 that’s probably 3-4 years old. I switch it between my SRAM Quickview mount on my road bike and Barfly mount on my TT bike often. Lately, the Garmin 500 has begun to rattle in the SRAM Quickview mount. It’s annoying.

Has anyone else had this problem? Is it unique to the Quickview mount? Would a different mount (like the K-Edge) solve this problem? Or is the Garmin 500 just worn and will begin to rattle in any mount?

Michael

Anyone?

Does it rattle in the barfly mount? If you still have the original garmin mounts, does it rattle in those?

I’d venture a guess that the quickview mount may be the culprit.

The Garmin 500 does not rattle in the Barfly mount on my TT bike. I just don’t want to buy a new mount (like the K-Edge) for $40 if I’ll have the same rattling problem.

Apparently, the rattling is not a common problem. Perhaps I have a defective SRAM Quickview Mount, though I’ve had it for over a year and it’s been rattling only recently.

I’ve had the little wing parts on the back of the 500 Edge chip, break and wear down on two units. The computer would start to rattle soon before total failure. Garmin repaired the first unit. The second time, I bought the required part on ebay, then made the repair myself. Failing wing tabs may, or may not be your issue.

My 500 fits pretty snug in the K-edge mount I have on my road bike.

Either the mount or the unit is wearing. If the tabs on the unit looks okay, then just replace the mount.

My K-edge is awesome. Super fit.

Interesting. I’ll have to look at the wings this evening. Is the wear obvious? And what part if needed for the repair? How do I search for such a part?

It’s the back plate. It’s all one piece. The wings breaking was (is?) a common problem. I sent mine back after the tabs broke off. I think it was about $90 for them to fix it. TBH, I’m not sure if they fixed it or just sent me a refurbished unit. It was perfect when I received it back.

Oh, that’s no fun. $90? For a piece of plastic? I there any new and improved 500 coming out any time soon?

Garmin would probably say thats what the 510 is. Or 800, etc.

Frankly, for my purposes, the 500 is perfect. I think they retail for $199 now. Measures everything I need. For mapping, etc., I’ll just use my phone.

Like the other poster said, you can probably get the part off a non working Garmin on eBay for much less.

You could grind down the mounting circle and glue a new one on…but don’t do that!

One of your mounts is snug and the other rattles…its not the garmin. It is the mount! You said it just started doing that, so it wasn’t defective but has simply wore out (or broke).

All 500’s come with several mounting brackets. Do you have any of those to test it?

There’s also an epoxy and dremel fix - probably worth a try before going the eBay route. Perhaps I should try the epoxy fix before I have breakage.

I’ll need to examine the back of the 500 tonight. I’ll also search for the original mount and see if that works. If it works, then I might order a K-Edge mount and hope for the best before assuming it’s the backside of the 500.

True…but honestly, it doesn’t sound like it’s the unit. It sounds like it’s the mount. A new SRAM mount is like $25. The nicer k-edge is about $40. Unless you see obvious wear on the unit, I’d just get another mount.

If it helps, here is a pic of the back of mine… click for pic
It is a refurbed unit, so it is almost new. If yours looks anything like it, then it is fine!

Thanks!!!

If you have any weather stripping tape, maybe put a small bit in the middle of the SRAM mount? Or, albeit worse, a tiny dab of hot glue. That will compress easily but still push the tabs on the Garmin solidly against the mount body, and should nuke any rattles. That said, make sure your tabs aren’t getting ground down.

OK. One of the tabs in mostly broken off. Ugh.

So questions:

  1. How durable is the epoxy fix? This is where you gob on a lot of epoxy and shape it with a Dremel too. ((Cheapest soluton)

  2. The replacement backs on EBay are about $50 (compared to the $90 fix from Garmin). How easy is it to replace the back of the 500?

Thanks!

Has anyone else tried the epoxy fix? Does the “fix” last?
