Garmin 310XT Swim software upgrade

Maybe I just missed the post, but I can’t believ no one has posted a thread on this. Looks like garmin has had a software upgrade for the 310XT to allow it to be used during the swim on your wrist.

I’ve just been putting the unit under my swim cap during OWS. Has anyone done the upgrade and used it and can provide some feedback? I’ve done the upgrade (I was due since I was still using version 2.49 or something like that). It will be a while before I get in another OWS.

Changes made from version 2.70 to 2.90: Implemented swim code that corrects distance values on open water swims. The distance is not displayed in real-time, but updates when the stop or lap button is pressed. This feature can be enabled only in ‘Other’ sport by going to Settings > Other Settings > Swim > Enabled ? Yes. Fixed issue with unit freezing during a manual or automatic lap. Fixed issue with GPS speed readings lagging by about 5 seconds. Fixed issue with unit lock-up when resetting an activity in ‘Other’ sport. Fixed issue with ‘Back to Start’ where start and end points were being left out. Improvements to dropping track points around turns. Fixed issue with repeated display of initial wheel calibration banner when using wheel power. Display change in HR value with the HR Recovery message current value. Improved power calibration page. Implemented smoothing for vertical speed.

In all fairness it was always possible to use the 310 on your wrist. However, you only ended up with time as usable data and a very convoluted swim track with an implausibly long distance.

I too am waiting for someone to post a swim track with the post swim correction applied. Would also be good to see it compared to the same swim with the device worn under the cap.

Our 310s are enabled, but it’s too cold and we’re too soft to brave the water outdoors at the moment. We’ll have to wait until we go to England in July/August. But there must be someone somewhere able to test out this setting and report back.

Looks like the update I’ve been waiting for. I’ve had my unit freeze up a couple of times on me and it’s really annoying to go out for a bike ride or run and not have it record anything.

In the process of upgrading as I write this.

Thanks for the heads up. Upgrade complete.

I plan to this weekend in some openwater swims, do a bunch of before/after type tests - and then pull it all into a post for early next week. I also have a conference call with some Garmin Engineers tomorrow to discuss the changes and get the skinny on how it all works. Looking forward to it.

How is swimming with the garmin on your arm/wrist? Does it seem “bulky” and in any way seem to affect your swim stroke? Granted I’ve swam with a regular watch on and dont think I’ve ever felt bothered by it, just wondering if the bigger watch seems to bother anyone!?!?

I just started using my 310xt in my masters sessions.

It felt pretty weird for the first 1 lap or so, and then I completely forgot about it.

Its no issue at all.

Wow this is great news! I have sunk to new depths of 310 hating and I really want to like my watch again! ill load when I get home and then I am going to swim in it even if I have to wrestle polar bears out of the way! (is that how you spell bear? big white scary creature - sorry mental block)

My “assumption” is that using this new feature will not allow the alarm to go off at set distances??

Since I’ve only done a few OWS, one of the things I liked about using the 310XT during the swim was the ability to set the alarm to go off at set distances. OWS distance seems a lot longer than swimming the same distance in a pool (mental block for me) so it works good for me to break the long distance into shorter blocks. If this is the case, at least for now I will not be using the feature and keep the watch under my cap just to keep the alarm feature.

I’ve already upgraded my 310XT to 2.9. The only “before” track I have is for swimming with it underneath my cap, not on my wrist, so I doubt it will make much difference.

But I’ve got to say the swim fix is nothing compared to the fixes that prevent it from locking up during manual lap or auto-lap. Those are HUGE. I purposefully avoided upgrading from 2.6 to 2.7 for that very reason. You should see all the threads about it on the Garmin forums.

I had been reading those threads on the Garmin forums, that is why I was still running Version 2.49 on my watch. I refused to upgrade until those “Bugs” had been worked out. My watch was running perfectly so no need to updage the software (other than I do get a log of Heart Rate spikes and errors. I did upgrade to 2.9 and crossing my fingers that no issues pop up with this versions.

I cannot seem to get the upgrade to work. I followed the instructions last night and downloaded the upgrade, but, I do not think it “took.”

When I go to “Other” then go to “Other Settings” I have no option listed for “Swim” to turn to “On.” So, it appears the upgrade did not take. Any ideas or recommendations?

The upgrade seems to be a 2 step process

  1. You download to the local agent
  2. The agent automatically transfers to the watch

Maybe step 2 didn’t occur for you.

If you go into “Settings” → “Bike Settings” → “About Forerunner” it will show what version you have. This works in Other, Run or Bike settings.

I just downloaded and it says “Beta Software 2.90”. I hate that word “Beta”

Planning an OWS this weekend

I will check that tonight. Thanks.

Did my first OWS post-update, and it worked great. Time and distance were very accurate.

I can’t get it to update either. Says the update was sent to the ANT agent, but it doesnt appear to be updating the watch. If anyone has an advise… please share.

Sometimes when transfers don’t kick off automatically I power off/on the watch with the USB key in the computer
If that doesn’t work I start/stop/reset a bogus workout to force the agent and watch to download. Maybe that will initiate the agent to watch transfer.

I’m just guessing.

The agent to watch transfer took about 13 to 15 minutes, so you know it is happening.

Can you post a pic of your swim route in Garmin Connect or Training Peaks so we can see what the post-update routing looks like?

anyone know how to get to update 2.9? My garmin connect page shows that the latest version is 2.7? Will it automatically do 2.9?
