Okay, who has swam with their Garmin 301 and drowned it? I am getting ready to venture out of the pools and into the ponds and wonder if anybody has killed theirs yet swimming?
I put mine in a ziplock bag, and then tape it to my cap. Not a drop has touched it. Still picks up HRM signal nicely.
Used my ‘old’ one under my swim cap for a couple of sea swim sessions, mainly to check distances etc. Shortly afterward HRM function totally crashed…coincidence or not, Garmin sent me a completely new unit.
Now, I don’t take it anywhere near the swim and in races only use it on the bike preferring to go by feel and mile markers on the run. Gives me something to calculate and take the mind off the pain!
I was just looking at the Garmin website and have to admit I am a bit confused about how waterproof the Forerunner is???
The main page says:
Waterproof: IEC 60529 IPX7 standards (submersible in one meter of water for up to 30 mins.)
But the detail says:
Most newer Garmin® GPS units are waterproof in accordance with IEC 60529 IPX7. IEC 60529 is a European system of test specification standards for classifying the degrees of protection provided by the enclosures of electrical equipment. An IPX7 designation means the GPS case can withstand accidental immersion in one meter of water for up to 30 minutes. An IPX8 designation is for continuous underwater use.
Ok, so it has the IPC8 designation which says continuous underwater use, but the main page says 1 meter for 30 minutes, but also waterproof…?
In my book, when you say WATERPROOF, that means it is just that. When it says “only for 30 minutes”, that doesn’t sound waterproof to me?
