I have a friend who uses a Garmin 301 that posted the following on another forum with no results. Can anyone help?
So here’s the Garmin question for any of you who use a Garmin. I’m using the bike interface but both yesterday and today at somewhere between 45 mins and an hour, the HR monitor was no longer engaged. I wet and rewet the chest strap but I lost all HR tracking. Has anyone experienced this? This has never happened with my running, and I’ve run over 4 hours with the Garmin. Wondering if there might be a preference in the settings in bike mode that I don’t know about that I need to adjust? (I checked the manual but didn’t see anything)
I have a 305 and only experience temporary loss of HR tracking when in the aero and I’m not sweating enough to keep the contact surface moist. Garmin has a great technical web-site. Perhaps an answer may lie with them?
I’ve had same thing happen sometimes when you receiver is mounted on handlebars in some positions it’s too far away. Or when your in aero it’s not makeing good contact… I pretty much don’t use the heart rate function anymore on the 301 still use my polar watch instead for that part.
There is an option on the menu go to general settings and set heart rate … there you can turn it on or off but also theres a button on the screen to do
a rescan. I’ve had problems with once it lost signal it won’t pick it up again during same workout until I rescan or non-preferred turn it off then on again.
“It also depends on how old the HRM batteries are.”
I second this opinion. Had issues with the HR, spent the $2.33 on a new battery and it worked good as new.
i third the battery. It’s realy easy to lose track of how long you are actually using that chest strap. 80 hours is realisticly 3 months or less for me. I’ve been on the same battery for just over 4 months and it’s getting flakey like that.
I have found that if it is getting realy flakey and can’t hold HR and/or GPS signal, just shut it off and restart it and that usually fixes it. Even better then just disabling the the HR or GPS and re-enabling it.
