Hey folks, I just purchased an FSA Gossamer power 2 max crank and I’m having trouble with it and my shimano BB. It’s a GXP crank and after about 30 minutes of riding, the end cap on the non-drive side works its way out of the spindle and subsequently the left crank arm begins to work it’s way off of the spindle as well. I’ve re-tightened it several times but it continues to do this. Do you have to use an FSA BB with FSA cranks? I figured 24mm spindle would work no matter what brand the BB and crank are. Thanks!
It’ll work but it’s REALLY tight. Best to pick up a Mega EXO BB. If the Cap is coming off then I’d guess that the threads never engaged the Spindle, which means that the Crank wasn’t inserted fully. How did the shifting work?
BTW “GXP” refers to SRAM’s English Threaded BB. The Gossamer P2M isn’t “GXP”.
Your Gossamer P2M will work with a FSA Mega EXO BB. This Shimano BB will also work, but it’s a very tight (read: rubber mallet) fit.
The FSA spindle is the same size, but the manufacturing tolerances between FSA and Shimano are not the same. So the FSA crankset usually works with an Shimano BB, but not always.
I’ve been using the FSA P2M for a while and had similar problems with the cap unscrewing. I just installed a Rotor P2M and thus moved the FSA over to a bike that previously had an Ultegra crank. Rubber mallet got it all together (tight tolerances) and I think I might have solved the cap unscrewing. Rotor has you screw in the cap to the low torque (1-3nm), tighten the pinch bolts and then tighten the cap to 7-8nm. I’ve never done that last step on the FSA before, but did last night and I think it might solve the problem. If you go tighter before the pinch band you end up with a stiff crank due to the compression, but by doing after it leaves everything good to go.
My winter bike did this and I also have an Ultegra BB installed. The bike came with the FSA crankset and an FSA BB, but the bearings in the FSA BB were completely shod after only 2 months, so I went the Shimano route instead (and it has held up fine for about 5 months of winter training now). I don’t know if the unscrewing of the cap is due to the Shimano BB. I can’t remember if it did it with the original FSA BB, but again, I only had that installed for 2 months.
In the autumn I actually gave it a drop of super glue so keep the thing from unscrewing. That seemed to work for about a month or two, then it came loose again. I then gave it another drop and tightened it, which held for a few days, and then…
The crank spindle actually broke in the left side very recently, likely due to the cap always unscrewing and letting the left crank arm move outwards and not engaging the spindle as much as it should. I then bought a used Ultegra crank to go with the BB and so far so good, no unscrewing of the cap on that one.
I would just get the Mega Exo BB. Might as well have the right one in there.
Make sure you add some thread locker on the pinch bolts and crank bolt. I used blue Loctite and had no issues. This is the product.

Also I would suggest using the megaexo BB. The FSA does use a 24mm spindle, but as opposed to other 24mm spindles it is plus tolerance. So while it will fit in other 24mm BB’s the fit will be much tighter and subsequently a lot harder to swap between bikes.

Just did the same. Use a rubber mallet to make sure the crank is fully seated. I had to give mine a couple of healthy whacks to seat it fully. Then put the non-drive side on and no problems so far.
The shimano BB and FSA crank are both nominally 24mm, but the Shimano seems to be 24- and the FSA 24+ thus it’s really tight. Well worth it, because the FSA BBs are not very durable as compared to the Shimano IME.
