Any ST’ers have problems with fructose?
What do you use for food/drink on the bike? And for recovery?
Homemade stuff? Brown rice syrup in a gel flask? Maltodextrin?
I know endura is fructose free-
So is Hammergel Sustained energy-
Any other bars, drinks, or gels?
I have a slight fructose intolerance and I avoid added fructose.
I dont use hammer stuff, never liked much, some have fruit juice which may bother you. I used First Endurance products, top notch stuff and all you need
you should watch out for fake sugars as well as sugar alcholols like mannitol, sorbitol and such which can bother people with fructose issues.
Other stuff but not as good of quality is: carbopro, powdered gatorade, GU Chomps , clif shots (yuck), shot bloks
ultimately try things that have none and see what works best. guts can be picky
Yes- fake sugars are the worst. Body takes no nutrition out of them- bacteria in intestine/colon feast on them. Splenda, Xylitol, and the like are poison. Sugarless gum and mints especially.
I like Lara Bars, which are basically ground up, compacted nuts and dried fruit, and nothing else. No bad stuff, very tasty, easy to carry. Yum.
dried fruit=fructose
.
Whoops, not following instructions! Sorry, dried fruit indeed has lots of fructose. I was thinking high fructose corn syrup, which gets all the attention for Bad Food. Maybe try just nuts, in that case, although they might be hard to digest alone…
As MattQ mentioned, you may want to have a look at 1st Endurance products. Their (2) primary *during *training/racing formulas (EFS Powder & Liquid Shot) do not contain fructose & contain no artificial colors or flavors.
I just sent them an e-mail.
At 1st blush it would seem that all their products are fructose free but you never know what is in “natural flavors”.
