808 & Stinger 90 have the torodial shape. I believe the H3 is the most aero of the lot & looks the coolest, but it could be said I’m biased ![]()
Best wishes for the Holidays
whats the torodial shape?
I ride the Blackwell 100 front and disc rear. I have had no handling issues, I am not a 140lb’er (180#) and an experienced cyclist. H3C’s are sweet wheels. It was a toss up for me. If there was a chance that I would be going to Kona I would have gotten the HED’s.
I also ride a Cannondale and like it so I do not expect much agreement here. ![]()

Good question. From HED’s website…
Used as a rear wheel or as a condition specific front wheel, the Stinger 90 is made for ripping time trials. Bladder molded with our patented torodial rim shape, the Stinger 90 is aero and lightweight. Compared to a flat sided wheel, the toroidal shape keeps airflow more laminar and reduces the turbulent area behind the wheel. Designed with a high surface area, low weight and minimal drag, the Stinger 90 is a very fast wheel.

Basically, the rim width stays the same over the braking surface, then gets wider & then narrows to a point. I hope I described it properly. I’ll try to find a cross section pics somewhere.
So it shaped like a main sail?
maybe…if I knew what a main sail is/was.
This is a main sail >> http://www.northsailsod.com/class/cscow/2006-black-tie.jpg

Kinda like this, but with a flat braking surface Image courtesy of ZIPP :-).
yep, like a main sail. thanks!
Maybe you can help me… in sailing terms, what do you call the side the wind comes from? What do you call the opposite side that is being sheltered from the wind? I apologize in advance if I’m not asking my question clearly.
