Crandell’s inspirational and often harrowing story was written with author and journalist John Hanc, a regular contributor to Newsday. The book traces Crandell’s 13-year battle with drug and alcohol addiction, shows how he finally achieved sobriety, and chronicles his new life as the head of a foundation aimed at preventing substance abuse among young people; and as a competitor in the grueling Ironman competition—as 2.4-mile swim, 112 mile bike and 26.2 mile marathon run.
Crandell’s involvement in this storied event has also earned him the prestigious Ford Everyday Hero award, presented to him after his participation in Ironman Arizona, also in April 2006.
