Frankfurt Area Pools for Lane Swim

Hi guys,

Next week I have book a hotel in Frankfurt for some business and would like to book close to a proper swimming pool. Ideally I will stay close to the airport, or to the Frankfurt convention center (one of the two) and ideally would like to take public transit or in the worst case taxi and avoid rental cars.

Something with lane swim between 6 am and 10 am would be perfect.

Rebstock Bad - Zum Rebstockbad 7, 60486 Frankfurt am Main, Germany

Titus Therme - Nordwest Stadt

Seedammbad -Seedammweg 7, 61352 Bad Homburg vor der Höhe, Germany

The 1st 2 are a free for all crazy lane swimming with no lanes, people just go any which way, you have to experience it because words do not do justice to this madness !! my brother in law thinks it’s normal.

I trained at Seedammbad before my Ironman Frankfurt, great pool, awesome lanes, color coded for how fast you swim at the time I was there.

I don’t know how good it is for lap swimming, but you can go here and enjoy the awesome water slide after your workout.

It’s not open yet, or maybe not at all. I just remember it being amazing when I was a kid.

It looks like Rebstockbad opens at 9. If you need something earlier, Eschborn (2 s-bahn stops away from Rebstockbad) has a pool that opens at 7. It’s maybe a 10-15 minute walk from the s-bahn station in Eschborn.

I used to swim at the Hallenbad at Hochst (http://www.swimmersguide.com/Home/ViewFacility?FacilityID=10539) It can be hard to get early morning swim times anywhere, though. I don’t remember specifically, but it is probably the same free for all that another poster mentioned.

Thanks to all of you for the suggestions so far! Biz travel is so much more simple when you can just run out of the front door of the hotel at any time…once you can’t run, then it’s a convoluted scheduling nightmare around hotels, pool times and business meetings and associated transport. Well on a plus side, I am finding out which cities that I do biz in have decent pools, so that is a plus for when I eventually can run properly again (but that time is not now)

Well, it’s not close to the airport, but I second the Seedammbad in Bad Homburg. It’s inexpensive and they have a 50 meter outdoor pool primarily used by serious swimmers and triathletes.
Ciao

Bad Homburg is a bit out of the way but +3 for that place. Also the Taunus Therme/fake pagoda place across the street is fucking awesome for relaxing, even though it is expensive as hell.

The trails in the forested area adjacent to that park are also very very good for running.

OK, so it sounds like you guys are suggesting to rent a car, and get a hotel in Bad Homburg and than commute into town each day. What would public transit (train/subway) options be like from airport to Bad Homburg and Bad Homburg to to Frankfurt Convention Center? Would prefer to avoid car rental and dealing with traffic.

The week before IM Frankfurt 2014, we were in a hotel in Bad Vilbel: a smallish town on the outskirts of Frankfurt. There’s an outdoor swimming pool http://www.bad-vilbel.de/de/freizeit/freibad that was then pretty good, with lanes for swimmers and a separate part for playing children. There’s an indoor swimming pool as well, but I haven’t been there. I think there’s a pretty good connection using public transport from Bad Vilbel to the Frankfurt town center, but we haven’t used that either, as we moved to a Hotel in the City Center for the race.

Rgrds,
Tom

If the pool is worth it to you, then you could take a short train from the airport to the main train station (Hbf.) and then take the “S5” train to Bad Homburg (total time ca. 45-60 minutes). Once in Bad Homburg (and assuming you are staying at a hotel on the “Kaiser-Friedrich-Promenade”, which is a 7-10 minute walk–or 2-3 minutes by taxi–from the Bad Homburg train station), the walk to the Seedammbad in only about 5-7 minutes.

To get from Bad Homburg to FFM is easy: you either take the S5 train or the tram (U-Bahn). Where do you need to be in the FFM?..near the main station, Sachsenhausen, Offenbach?

On a side note, I know that you cannot run right now, but as the other poster mentioned, on the other side of the Kurpark (where the pools are located) there is a great little wooded area for running called the Hardtwald.

Let me know if you need any further info.

P.S. And if you are around, you can catch an EM match with me at one of the pubs.

Hi Dev,

The outdoor pool season has started late here in Frankfurt because the weather has been so bad, but most of them are open now.

You´re pretty much guaranteed of getting some space to yourself as the locals tend not to go swimming unless the weather is 85°+, which at the moment it definitely isn´t!

Keep an eye on the thunderstorms which we´re getting on a daily basis, the lifeguards will pull you out if there´s any risk, which can be a nuisance.

Anyway, here are a few possibilities:

Waldschwimmbad Neu Isenburg: 50m pool, heated, not busy. A really lovely pool.

Bad Vilbel: nice town, just near me, the Freibad is apparently open although I haven´t been yet. Empty during the day, gets busy at weekends. 08:00-20:00, Huizener Straße, Bad Vilbel.

Stadium Freibad (Stadion) - currently only open from 07.00-10.00 (Frühschwimmen). VERY convenient for an airport hotel. 50m pool. Bearing in mind your schedule this is probably the one to go for.

Brentanobad - currently closed but this is definitely the one. Swimmable length of 125 metres!

Hausen - next door to Brentanobad. 25m heated outdoor pool, very nice.

I would strongly advise against getting a hire car. I´m happy to drop a road bike off to your hotel (with a decent lock and lights!) for you to use during your time here. Probably a 59cm. Plenty of nice roads to be discovered. That way you can zip about the city etc etc.

Cheers

Simon

Hey Flemish Arrow, I thought you lived in Leipzig? But it seems you are in Frankfurt now? Would be glad to catch the Germany vs N. Ireland game with you on Tuesday evening. I am going to stay out close to the airport that night to catch a Wed AM flight home. Mon night will stay in Bad Homburg as you guys are suggesting so I can use the pool on Mon and Tue AM. Fire me a note offline from ST to figure out times etc. Thanks for the suggestions!

Simon, this is why ST rocks…but I fear a 59 cm bike would be the length of my inseam (OK, I am not that bad…but it fit best on a 50-52 cm bike)!!!

Got a 50cm flat bar road bike you could use… Just saying!

LOL, I was just in Europe last week and I took my bike as I also rolled in a few days of vacation so I could ride in the Alps. I was pretty tempted to leave my road bike in the bike case and haul in back, but realistically all the overhead of hauling a bike is not worth it if you’re on a compressed business timeline which will be the case this round. But if you want to meet up for swimming at Bad Homburg, on Tue AM or catch a Euro game on Mon or Tue PM, I’m in for either. Life is a ton more convenient when you can run though…no equipment, no facilities, no open/close times!

Definitely will! PM me your hotel details and / or cell number!
Cheers

Hey Dev,

Sorry for the delayed response. Yes, I was living in the east, but moved to FFM not too long ago. Would love to meet up for a match, but Tuesday is the only day that I will be gone for work. Monday or Weds. evenings would work for me. I’ll PM you my cell.

Take care and have good trip.
