For almost 2 months my legs have been in constant pain, I stopped running about 45 days ago but still bike and swim with not much issue and have been substituting running by using the elliptical which doesn’t cause pain either but on a daily basis it hurts to walk and I can’t go up and down stairs without hobbling and using the handrail, I am in my mid-30’s and this is no way to live. The issues are partially ITB but a lot of pain where the vastus lateralis and bicep femoris run in the middle of the leg as well as glutes that I need to work on as well. I go to my PT and massage therapist to get stretched out, ART and rubbed down and use foam roller at least once per day and anything else that will dig in there, I find a lacrosse ball works best. I dig in as aggressively as I can and it seems to help temporarily until the next day where I am back to square one. Could I be doing more harm than good by digging in so hard, am I taking the right steps and is there anything else I should be doing? Thanks in advance.

Geez I thought I had problems with my calf discomfort ( recent post). That’s a lot of problems for a person your age. How many miles are you / were you running? Diet? You may want to get checked out by a Medical doctor. Ther may be more going on with you. You should not feel that bad until you get in your 50’s or 60’s man!
I know, you are totally right about how I should not be like this at this age. My running mileage was not too high at all, just building back from late season IM but that is nothing new. Diet is good, i’m 5’9" and lower 150’s right now, race weight is mid 140’s. Nothing has changed in my training volume, racing etc. I’ve done 16 IM’s and this is the worst I have felt in my entire race career.

As others have told me…make sure you have newer shoes stretch before and after. I like to walk a good half mile before and after workout etc…
I’m assuming your not over trained, but if you are, you may need to take a break of about a month or two just stretching and eating a good diet. I would go get checked out as well by an Md. Have them draw blood tests and see if there is anything else going on with you

Are you doing that aggressive deep massage over the greater trochanter (bony bump on the femur below the hip)? If so, you could be aggravating the bursal sacs there. Google “trochanteric bursitis” or “greater trochanter pain syndrome.”
Yes, that is one of the places where I am really digging in, I will look into trochanteric bursitis. Do you know that if aggravated that area could it have a reverberation affect on other areas of the leg as well? Thanks

Muscle Imbalance is the biggest cause of injury with running/biking/swimming
If you don’t have a good PT or Osteopath to help you identify your bad areas then start there
Most likely you have tightness in areas that are causing joint and nerve pain
I missed all of 2010 from just over use and ignoring imbalance
Now I can run without pain but I really have limited my volume
You need to be pain free walking to enjoy life

Pain usually alters normal biomechanics. Subtle changes in gait to reduce pain could put your whole kinetic chain out of balance.

I am in my 50’s and I feel better then ever! But until two weeks ago I still felt tense and my calves and hamstrings were tight. Then I changed the way I walked! I walked way to fast,my steps were short and I was hunched over. When I walk that way all my weight and stress goes onto my calves and hamstrings so the more I walked the more tension I felt. The trick is to relax,SLOW DOWN,straighten your back, head held high,SWING your hips and SWAGGER! The more stress you feel the slower you go and the more you exaggerate the motion. The more you exaggerate the motion the less stress on your calves and hamstrings and more power goes to your thighs and hips where it belongs. In two weeks my life is totally transformed! It translates to running also. Put a little swagger into your run and is much easier.
