Anyone have any insight, or ideas on when we may see the Forerunner 955?
My Fenix 5X is beginning to die a slow death, the Forerunner 945 is on sale on the Garmin site, and seems like other online forums suspected it earlier this spring.
Hoping it comes out by this summer before most races actually start happening.
I’ve had the Fenix 5x for almost 3 years now and it seems bulletproof to me. I hope it never dies - what issues are you having with it?
It still “works” but the activity pusher (top right) is getting a bit sticky, not quite as firm as it once was. Upon starting it up, it takes a good 5mins or so to get going (I did a reset the other day and still takes forever). Lastly, took about an hour today to upload a 50min swim to Garmin Connect/Training Peaks, though that could’ve been a server issue. otherwise works fine, just looking to get a new watch since I’ve had it about as long as you have.
All in all, happy with the 5X however as soon as the new Forerunner comes out, I will buy it same day
Unless they have some new features up their sleeve, the only real feature thats known on other Garmin watches would be the solar charging capabilities. LTE was mentioned also as an obvious upgrade.
Theres also software type upgrades such as “snap to known route” that Suunto just put out, but that can likely be done via software upgrades - and Garmin continues to add those type of features onto the 945, F5, etc.
ETA: oh, and Power in the watch (without a footpod)
I have a 5x that I bought when it just came out, still working ok but there’s a few things that bother me about it, like dropping my power meter signal (I don’t use it on bike rides anymore).
I’ve been holding out for the 955 LTE since the rumors about it said it would be released last September, but at that $360 for the 945 I could resell it and get the 955 when it eventually comes out and not lose too much.
Next week, we’ll be sharing a new smartwatch from one of the top device brands in tri (🤠we can’t say who) with a new feature that could change the way we train.
Could just be the 945 LTE’s ability to receive messages from spectators (i.e. Coach) during an activity.
Which would be a DQ under UCI and any governing bodies that reference UCI rules, as that would be classed as a communication device. Ironman in NA also would class that as illegal equipment on the basis that sending or receiing a text message would be using a communications device in a ‘distractive manner’.

Well, the other one would be an AMOLED screen. I think there is a certain expectation of a better display at this price point, but whether Garmin can do this while maintaining the excellent battery life that many users also expect is an open question.
personally, the biggest thing i’d like to see changed from the 945 is to reduce the screen bezel so they can make it the 745 body size with the same effective display as the 945. preferably lower profile too.
i’m sure there are lots of fancy features they could add that might be of value to me but i’m not even fussed about music and maps.
of course the #1 thing would be to improve usability and reliability but it seems that is not a priority for garmin

It did say “change the way we train”, not race.
Could also be a variation on workout of the day or (I hope) running power based plans.
I would like to see the garmin’s watch faces be full “screen”. I find it odd that my older Samsung Galaxy smartwatch has full display of the screen while the Garmin watches have the 3 mm or so border. I’d love for them to maximize the screens for bigger data fields.

Good call. A lot of the watch face “widgets” that you can add are oddly small and mis-sized
Yep, but my comment was in response the the quote about coach input in a race.
And this is going to be one that becomes so hard to enforce you’d expect the rules have to be changed.
But having the ability to send an SOS (of the please pick me up I’ve run out of tubes or pulled a hamstring) without phone would be great (for me). But not at the cost of battery life or a bigger unit.
I was just highlighting that the one specific advantage identified in a specific earlier post over current watches was something explicitly against the rules.
Not implying there aren’t already ways to break that rule, not that using the same features in other situations wouldn’t be useful and potentially justify the upgrade.
