Took a corner today and the unit came out of the “quick release bike mount” and into oncoming traffic. Called Garmin and they are going to warranty replace it with no hassle. Anyone else have problems with the bike mount not holding well?
Mine did the flying dismount yesterday as well. Luckily it didn’t meet with the fate of yours but it happened to land on the foot of my training partner during his upstroke. The unit was subsequently punted several feet into the air before landing on the pavement at 26 mph. It only has a few scratches but I feel lucky.
I haven’t had this problem (knock on wood), but I can also say Garmin replaced my 205 outside of the warranty period for free as well. Things like that really make me want to stick with a company’s products.
Thanks for the tip about swapping out the pins. I did not know it mattered!
Had the same thing happen to me last year 3 weeks before IronMan Wisconsin. Had no choice but to pony up some more cash and buy another one. Just added more cash to that IronMan blackhole. Mine looked exactly like that — if you put the pieces back together, you may get it to somewhat work. I have mine on the bike – the gps part doesn’t work, but the rest does.
Ha! same thing happened to me in 2007, mine broke apart but worked (held together by a rubber band).
garmin corp. replaced “free”…great company for dealing with stuff like this.
Now, I use a small piece of black electric tape to hold it in…have not had the issue again.
But, when it comes apart, you can see why it is NOT waterproof…i.e. whats holding it together? elmers glue?
Here is my setup: http://giambrone.info/stuff/305_kit.htm
I’ve purchased but not used the quick release mount yet for that very reason! Thanks for the heads up!
On an unrelated note… is that battery hard-wired in or is there a connector for it? I’m wondering how easy it would be to replace with a longer lasting one.
The battery was hardwired to the external terminal board, but wouldn’t be hard to replace. I dont think the unit would go back together and be very waterproof, without some careful glueing though. It appeared to me that the top and bottom housing is glued together in some fashion and doest rely on a mechanical lock and gasket.
I will be surely devising some scheme to secure the unit into the bike mount better. Thinking about maybe gluing a small fishing line lanyard to the unit and mounting a tether and quick release clip to the bike.
