I was wondering, does anyone use forearm support in their aerobars? I noticed that Rohan Dennis used what to appear to be forearm supported aerobars when he won the Australian TT national championships last week.
I know TJ appears to have something like this on his Dimond, however I haven’t seen it too much in the tri world.
Seems like a great way to relieve shoulder stress when rotating forward, especially in a mantis position.
The big issues with the Sonic Strykes were the lack of adjustability and the inability to change arm positions during the ride. These are probably not issues if you are a pro and get a custom bar, and are doing a 1hr. TT where you don’t really shift positions…but for a triathlete in an IM.
I looked at the photos and missed the new extensions, but I did notice how much higher his position is this year.
I don’t think the “pads” have anything to do with comfort. I bet this is an attempt to integrate the extension with the forearm. If you think about it, extensions are pretty much the last round piece of tubing on a TT bike and cleaning up the front end is the best way to reduce drag. Those J-bends with high hands were an aerodynamic disaster. You had a crappy round tube and did nothing to fill in the backside. Putting the bar and forearm together eliminated the low pressure area. It looks like these bars now change the leading edge to be more aero still. I bet Dennis picked up 10 watts from the bars alone. He should have saved those for the TdF.
