Ford announced they will move to 100% online sales with no haggle pricing. This will be for EVs only and a key difference with Tesla is that they will still go through their dealer network. So I guess more like Saturn with online orders. But dealership will have no on-site inventory, everything will be advanced orders.
I guess this is the best time to move to this model when demand has outstripped supply and most sales are over MSRP. When things return to normal, dealers should be happy as they won’t have to carry as much inventory and all sales will be at sticker. And no one likes the current dealer model. Toyota is advertising their online orders as well, but I don’t think they are making the commitment that Ford is to the much more Tesla like model.
The dealers don’t want to sell EVs anyways. The scheduled maintenance cycles for EVs are significantly less than ICE vehicles. Service is a big profit center for dealers.

Can someone tell me why car dealerships are a politically powerful ecosystem like hedge funds or oil and gas? What’s up with their business model?

way back OEM’s screwed customers, so state’s nearly all set up franchise laws that required OEM’s to sell the vehicles to dealers who could then sell them how they wanted…
It was to protect consumers… now many years later, it sure doesn’t seem that way

Back in the early days of automobiles, taxes on vehicles were the largest sources of revenues for state and local governments. All that money led to influence, which in turn led to favorable laws and local monopolies.

Yeah if you go to the highest paid people chart or richest people chart it’s like oil and gas, hedge fund, car dealerships, which makes me think we need some taxes or regulations in those areas. This is one area I agree with he who shall not be named with regard to direct sales, IOW rent seeking, which as a YIMBY I’m generally against.

And now we have 8 lane freeways and I can’t even walk anywhere in my liberal college town.
My local US representative has his name on half a dozen dealerships. I don’t think he is the only one in Congress.
Mine does as well and he touts himself as a self-made man who built his business from the ground up. Except, he started on the 3rd floor of a 4-story building because he inherited the dealerships from his dad. He’s a real piece of shit.
Most modern cars are much bigger than the cars my parents had when we were growing up. And EVs have more space than their ICE counter parts. They have much more space inside than their outside looks would suggest. You wouldn’t be able to take the kids and the dog on a cross country road trip in the Mach E, but as a daily family hauler it would do a pretty good job.
