Hi! Are you the guy with the timetrial champion daughter? I seem to remember you posting about her a few weeks back. Congratulations! Anyway, my 20-yr old sister is thinking of switching to pure cycling from triathlon (she’s been doing it for almost 6 years). This is something that I am not too keen on myself since she does pretty well (she’s the national U-23 champ of the Philippines) but she has become frustrated with her swimming (important for the ITU format) and she feels that her success so far is not because of any sort of potential but more a product of weak competition in our country. Since her strength is cycling then she feels it’s a good idea to cross over. However, we both know practically nothing about how to structure a pure cycling program. Any suggestions on good resources or online coaches? Our particular concern is that the mileage involved for her to perform well may be too much in relation to what she is doing now. And, it is not an easy thing to find accessible and safe roads in Manila!
What kind of training does your daughter do? Just to give you an idea, my sister is planning to make the Southeast Asian games in December where she will be entered in 3 events–a 30km TT, 30km crit, and an 80km road race. I think she already has a pretty good base from the past years of training and also the work she has already done since January 2003 so I’m thinking her training would involve more strength and speed. Or, I could be totally wrong because, as I said, this is totally new territory to me!
Any help will be highly appreciated!
Kim
