Food logging, Canadian Edition

I am 5 9" and 168 lbs. I think I need to lose at least 10 lbs. and that is a mixture of fat and muscle (my guess is about 60% muscle as I have been lifting weights for a couple of years before running and tri). I am thinking about keeping track of what I eat. I experimented with FitDay.com website, didn’t like the interface. I use a Mac so I searched for a software and found CalorieKing. I really like the UI but first it’s not free and I am a cheapa$$ student and second the database is geared towards the brands sold in the states not in Canada. Although I can make custom foods, I tought I would ask here first, whether there is an alternative with a better repository of labels of foods found in Canada.
My friends think that I am nuts , but again they aint runners or triathletes. Any advice about how to stick to a diet is appreciated, my experience with dieting has been pretty disappointing. One of my friends said something rediculous but scary if true, she said when my body burns muscle as fuel, it can be of any organ like even heart. I don’t wanna burn my heart muscle!!! The biceps and chest are here for sale not the heart!!
