FOG in my watch!

Is there a secret to de-fogging a watch? My waterproof watch that I’ve swam with 1000 times somehow got water in it. I’ve never removed the battery cover, and I want to avoid sending it away for several weeks to get fixed… it still works. i just can’t see anything…

it still works. i just can’t see anything…

Don’t worry, it won’t work for long.

you’re lucky its just in your watch. I had it for my entire ride on Saturday. Brrrrrrr.

the cover will most likely have to come off to let the watch dry, I suspect that water may have got in via one of the buttons. its possible that with old age the seals may be starting to fail.

I have ahd this happen a few times on different dive watches and every time, without fail, it ends up getting replaced. save yourself the money of “fixing” it and just buy a new watch.

My watch isn’t that old. I probably got it last fall…

It’s a Timex Ironman 50 lap. Maybe I will send it back. Not sure if I can live without a watch!!!

Same thing happened to my watch after a few open water swims. Took it back to REI and got a replacement on the spot.

REI has a great return policy: everything in the store has a lifetime warranty. I’ve replaced a Polar HR monitor as well. No reciept needed if you are a member.

I can’t remember where I got it! Apparently my brain is foggy too…

This has happened to my old watches twice, I came up with a solution that fixed one but didn’t help the other much. Put your watch for several hours on top of the ventilations of an old school CRT TV (No LCD or Plasma or other new stuff) you need a hot, energy inefficient cathodic ray tube. The heat of the lamp will vapor the fog and if the leakage hole is not clogged it will be forced to get out of your watch, just realize that your watch will no longer be water proof even if it is fixed this way.

My camera got hit with a water balloon (long story) and that some how happened to the inside lens. I just put a hair dryer (without heat!) on it for a couple of minutes and it was good as new. It might work for the watch too?

I’ll try this. I do have a hairdryer but no CRT TV…

The watch is toast, send it back to timex. They have a pretty good exchange policy. There are only two times in a day. If it is light it is a daytime activity, if it is dark it is a night time activity. What do you need a watch for? The manager of Kona Brewing told me that. He knew we were from Oahu cause we all had watches. Took mine off the next day and haven’t used one in 7 years. Time isn’t all that it is cracked up to be.

I thought it was your brain… :stuck_out_tongue:

and no tan line
watches are overrated

Do I need to buy you another barbie watch?

hot water cupboard it. i’ve had watches ‘fog’ up a lil and still used em ok in water.

I’ve had my polar HR monitor get fog in it - although the store salespeople warned me not to, I just put the hairdryer on low and dryed the watch from about 10 inches away for about 10-15 minutes. The fog went away - but if I fried it, it voids the warranty. However, my good frined who knows everything about these types of things said it would work, and she was right… but do so at your own risk!

thanks… 15 min with a hairdryer, and it looks readable again. There’s still some water in there, but it’s not bad. Thanks! That was a great tip.

Did you get your watch in the kids section?

Did you shower in it? That is 99% of the time what causes it. The heat from the shower steam causes rapid expansion of the gaskets, which allows the steam in. That and pushing the buttons underwater.
