Flying with Co2 cartridges

Is it allowed? Do you have to put them in the checked baggage?

99% sure you can not take them checked or carry on.

co2 cartridges are subject to a 10,000.00 dollar fine for EACH one.

I was caught at the airport with 4 of them … I was trapped.

But they let me off. It was a warning that I have not forgotten.

NOOOOOOOO !!

I accidentaly put my C02 cartridge in my suitcase on my flight back from Arizona.

They checked my bags, wrote me up,and I just received a 'Warning" letter in the mail from the US Department of Homeland security.

Wherever your flying too, find a bike shop and buy your c02 there.

Why do the airlines have a problem with CO2 cartridges in baggage?

Do they thing the 5 psi change in air pressure is going to make a difference and make them explode?

Is there another reason?

Definitely not. One option besides finding them at the local bike shop is to send some in the mail to your destination, only costs a few $ and saves the hassle of finding a bike shop.

I’m almost embarrased to admit this but…

When I got to CDA last year I went to Wal-Mart, bought a box of cartridges and kept the receipt. After the race, since I didn’t need any of them, I returned them for a full refund.

Why? Nothing wrong with returning a product you don’t need and haven’t used as far as I can tell. It isn’t like you used them then returned empty cartridges.

Not sure what the science or logic is but it isn’t an airline rule - it’s the FAA and TSA. Your friendly, local ticketing agent has no authority over the issue.

The list of prohibited items from TSA is here: http://www.tsa.gov/interweb/assetlibrary/Permitted_Prohibited_Facts.doc

(look all the way at the end of the document under “compressed gas cylinders”)

They are not allowed… it’s only luck if you don’t get caught.

UNLESSyou attach the CO2 cartridges to a self inflating life vest. And, then… I’m not sure the inspectors know there own TSA regulations allowing for this acception.

I’ve not tried this approach, but am thinking about trying it one day to see if it will work… of course, It would be best if I attach a visable copy of the rules indicating this only exception to allowing CO2 cartridges in packed luggage.

This is only allowed for check in baggage… which could lead to another problem… the inspector may not be aware of this exception and unpack your checked in luggage… for that reason, I would never put it in a bike case.

This is the only exception to the rule that I know… anything else is not acceptable.

.

Here are a few references regarding transportation of CO2 cartridges…

http://www.southwest.com/travel_center/sports_equipment.html

Go to the bottom of the page.

Here is a another note regarding this matter… TSA/FAA regulations conflict regarding CO2 cartridges…

Southwest stated that the exception in Sec. 175.10****(a****)(25) for
carbon dioxide cylinders when used in a self-inflating life vest, is
inconsistent with the allowable quantities of two small cylinders plus
two spares in the international rules, and that consistency is needed
between the two sets of regulations. Southwest stated that in addition,
the exception for carbon dioxide, solid (dry ice) should be reviewed
and compared with the simplified version in the IATA Dangerous Goods
Regulations that limits dry ice to 4.4 pounds in checked or carry on
baggage.

AS FOR THE ACTUAL TSA/FAA REGULATION… HERE IT IS:

It’s down the page a bit…

Wish I would of thought of that when I went to St. Croix last year. I figured i would pick some up at the Expo. Unfortunately the Expo was sold out of them when I got there. I was lucky not to get a flat.

Its a damn stupid rule, given that every seat on the plane has one under it, attached to the lifejacket.

I used to do serious ocean racing, and had mine taken off me when it was attached to my self-inflating lifejacket in Queensland, so it is not just a problem in the states.
