Fly into honululu and take inter island flite////then pay twice for bike?

curious if i buy 2 r/t…sea to honu and then differnt airline honu to kona…then i pay twice for the bike
air fare is cheaper this way …but bike adds up to 50.00 or 100 x 4???

Good luck.

It’s a major rip off whatever you do.

There is also the chance, I emphasize chance, that you will not have to pay on one of the flights or pay something different.

We flew Delta to Kona last year - we had some travel vouchers - but were prepared for the advertised $150 bike fee, each way. As it was they charged us $25 for “an second bag” for my wife and then leaving the island everyone it seems was getting hit up with a $100 bike fee. So we felt we had done well paying only $125 to get MissP’s bike to/from Kona. I met people in Kona, Euro folk mostly, who had paid more to get their bikes to Kona than they had paid for themselves. That’s when this extra charge for the bikes starts to be a bit absurd.

Ironically I am just about to book a flight on Hawaii air to from hnl - koa. Used delta freq flier miles to from home to hnl did not think about hawaii air charging me for the bike as well as delta? This just seems to make the UPS or Fed Express option of shipping the bike seem more attractive. Isn’t their an LBS that for a fee receives them?

Thanks,
RF

Hawaiian airlines charges $25 for a bike on an interisland flight, same as a surfboard.

swim across with the bike in a boat behind you

good training
.

DL is charging $300 each way from Europe these days for a bike. 2 bikes, RT is now $1200. Sad and wrong on so many levels. Hence we rented in Tuscany for our trip last month.

Needless to say, it is getting too expensive to fly your bike anywhere, anymore. I hope the airlines realize that they are actually LOSING revenue with these prices, because I would not blink about paying $100 each way, but $300, they are smokin crack. Most of our bikes weight less and hardly take up more space than the average large suitcase these days.

  1. Use a double bike case.

  2. Buy tickets through Hawaiian and make your final destination the inter-island desired. Check your bike (s) all the way through, possibly ending up with one charge

ex 1: double bike case (2 bikes)+ Oversize checked all the way through= $250 RT

ex 2: double case+ oversized checked HNL+ inter= $300 RT

ex 3: 2 bike cases checked all the way through= $400 RT

ex 4: 2 bike cases+ inter island= $500 rt +$50= $550 RT

  1. Buy tickets through Hawaiian and make your final destination the inter-island desired. Check your bike (s) all the way through, possibly ending up with one charge

this has been the main item in the past. as is the sad case, rates of extra charges now change by the hour.
the main idea here is to have your luggage (read bike) checked through so you do not touch it or recheck it at any point. i don’t believe that necessarily means one airline. it will mean some sort of ticket/travel agent or outfit (travelocity, etc.) setting up the whole itinerary so that it happens that way.
as aforementioned, caveat emptor. this gouging seems to make us all very crabby.
peggy

i think you can ship your bike to Kona, to a shop, they will set it back up for ya to race/ride, then do the same for return trip…

There is, and they’re not far from the airport. I’ve always had great experiences with them.

Hawaiian air charges $35 for a bike right now. And charges $15 for the first checked bag and $25 for the second.

Mokulele air charges $25 for the bike, and nothing for the first checked bag, but $17 for the second.

Mokulele code shares with continental, so you might be able to ‘interline’ the bags if you fly those two and avoid the second fees, likely to happen on the way to hawaii, but not likely to happen on the way home.

Go charged my friend $10 from Kona to Honolulu today.

im thinkink alaska and hawaain air
