Floyd Landis homemade altitude chamber

I was reading part of Floyd Landis’ “Positively False” and he talks about how he built his own Altitude Chamber. Apparently he got a 10 foot long section of metal drainage pipe (with a wide enough diameter that he could sleep in), he hooked up a some type of air vaccum to it (the same he saw on another altitude tent) and just sealed it off…and put a cheap altimiter inside. In total it cost him around $800. Anyone else ever think about this? Floyd said he still has it and uses it to this day!

I don’t think my girlfriend would appreciate sleeping (or anything else) in a 10 foot long drainage pipe…

Yea…you start going at it with her in there and next thing you know would be rollling it into the wall.

He was asked about the performance benefits of the altitude chamber at the LA Tri Club meeting I moderated last month - he wasn’t very enthusiastic about the benefits of using one. He spoke about training hard and getting a good night sleep being far better.

Too close to home?

I KEED I KEED!

Girls aren’t to fond of the expensive tent-over-queen altitude tents, either, btw.

I would imagine, trying to sleep in a drainage pipe would not be the best place to attempt to get a good night sleep;-)

r. Apparently he got a 10 foot long section of metal drainage pipe (with a wide enough diameter that he could sleep in),

i think he took a drainage pipe so he could remove right away of the water the he lost during sleeping on altitude ,and dry him out

i guess he did not take a high oxygen intake % like 98 % of course with water

boy o boy if he did that its even worse then i tought

Dude, if you build one I will come down to Muncie and help build…

Come on buddy…just imagine it is public sex. Get with the times!

When I was in college I was part of the science team and I would have to agree sleeping in a drainage pipe is not good. Then again it might have been the 18 beers I had before falling into that drainage ditch

I suggest you look into intermittent hypoxic training. I haven’t used a tent or a an IHT system but the claims of IHT systems seem valid. Basically you are better off doing intervals of breathing 15,000-20,000 foot air for an hour than sleeping at 10,000 for 8.

I recently wanted to do this to my tiny apartment. I talked to a friend of mine who was an engineer and he said “sure, you can do it cheap, but the cost of those tents comes in from all the safety devices they have to 1) regulate and make sure you get enough oxygen and 2) warn you if you don’t.” Like any number of sexual deviants have found out, you have to be VERY careful when playing around with your oxygen consumption. You don’t wanna be the triathlete version of that guy found naked with a belt around his neck.
