Whats the difference? Both seem to have same stuff.
I started flaxseed oil in the fall and fish oil in December. I would have to say that I have noticed some improvements in my cardiovascular system and joints. It seems to me that it takes longer for me to go “hypoxic” when swimming and in the mornings, when I get out of bed, my ankles and knees don’t feel as sore as they use to. No other proof to offer…
I thought you were talking about Barry Bonds.

I haven’t taken flaxsees oil. Well I dont know the difference but I can tell you is I absolutely notice a difference with the fish oil. I take one cap a day at night (keep in the freezer and eat with food or you’ll burp fish) and after a long run I take 2 with my big breakfast…I run at least 50mpw and notice I feel recovered and don’t have any aches after longer or hard runs. I can’t think of what it could be besides that as that is the only change I have made.

Thats snake oil! ![]()
You are talking about the actual oil right not the pill form Fish oil??? That smells gross and there seems a huge dosage issue with the pills.
As someone who encourages patient’s to try and get their nutrients from natural sources, this is one exception where I heartily endorse supplementing. Almost all of us can benefit from omega-3’s as we’re nearly all deficient in this important and essential fat. Unfortunately, the best source, fish, is contaminated w/ mercury to dangerous levels. Some people shy away from fish oil as they dislike feeling like they burp up a gold fish an hour after ingesting. Unfortunately, while flax seed will ultimately give you omega-3’s, it comes primarily in the form of ALA which needs to be converted into long chain omega-3’s. This is impaired in some and becomes harder to convert in all of us as we age. Fish and cod liver oil contain high levels of the long chain omega-3’s and good quality products take the oil through a mercury distillation process. We carry Carlson’s in our office. I also know Nordic Traditions are a very high quality product. I recommend Fish oil in the summer when we’re all getting lots of sun and cod liver oil in the winter (it’s also a good sourse of vit. D) when we in the Northwest are sunlight deprived. If you’re supplementing vit. D or live in a sunny climate, stick w/ the fish oil as vit. D is stored and can become toxic at high levels. If you really want to be the “first on the block” get some Krill oil. Yup, Krill…same stuff the whales eat. It is the highest cleanest source of omega-3’s and loaded in antioxidants. You’ll be hearing more and more about this soon. Yummy?
I take ground flaxseed, (don’t know about flaxseed oil) which as you know is high in Omega 3’s which is good for the heart and your cholesterol. Ground flaxseed is also a great source of fiber. I also take a lower dose fish oil supplement. I don’t know if I am taking too much Omega 3 oils. If I am, I will reduce the fish oil and stick to the flaxseed for my source of Omega 3. Ground flaxseed seems to be a better all around alternative, at least that’s what my research led me to believe. Any Dr.'s want to chime in?
Sorry, this was posted before I could read the SpencerDC’s post.
That krill oil sounds great. I tend to stay away from flax as I have read that it can promote estrogen production in the body.
So fish oil is better than flax seed oil?
What is the dosage? On the bottle it says 1 pill per meal which is 3000mg total
Body builders get like 10000mg at least.
Yes
.
Any advice on the dosage?
If you take one 1000mg capsule per meal you’ll be in the ball park. Look for 3,000 - 4,000mg/d
I’m guessing that if Record/Chip chimes in here, he’s going to vote for the fish oil.
I down a tablespoon of Cod Liver Oil every morning! It’s foul but I suck it up, buttercup! ![]()
it also depends on the formula. some is concentrated strength. just follow the bottle.
Care to recommend any brands of Krill Oil?
There are others that I’m sure are good that I just haven’t researched. Those I’ve looked at this is the best.

Here’s what I figured out so far. The stuff your looking for in the fish oil is the EPA/DHA. Don’t make me spell it. So look at your ingredients list and see how many mg’s of epa/dha you have in each serving. Then shoot for 2700mg epa/dha. This is a therapeutic dosage used for general osteoarthritis. Cardiologists often times recommend 3000mg of epa/dha. Then you can go crazy and look for different ratios of epa:dha. Depending on what you want to use it for, a 2:1 ratio for joint problems, 3:1 for pshyco problems (maybe even 4:1) and then dha for prenatal, and there’s even 7:1. There’s probably more but this is my limit. I’d just try to get enough (divided doses) and let the body figure out what to do with it. The optimal human can only convert 15% of what flaxseed has to offer, or so I have read, so I’d skip it. Avoid omega 6, its pro-inflammatory. You don’t need more.
My dog’s very highly regarded oncologist recommended DHA derived from algae for cancer. He was taking 800 mg/day (50 lb dog).
