Flat Pedals

I switched from speedplay pedals to basic $10 flat pedals and I love it.

There is science out there making that claim that clip in pedals don’t provide any advantages over flats. I’ve read stuff supporting each side, but for me, I’ll never go back…for so many reasons.

Anyone else?

Are you two assholes just trying to make it clear that you are assholes?

The guys at GCN did a test holding same watts but clips ins vs flat pedals, and the metabolic effect was the same if I remember correctly. The guy couldn’t believe it. Check YouTube GCN channel.

What shoes do you use when riding. No discomfort in longer rides?

So, it is kind of like using Powercranks; right?

Are you riding toe clips? I was reading the rules on one race site and was surprised to see that toe clips are no longer allowed in some races - might be draft-legal ones.

What kind of shoes are you using with your new flat pedals?

What kind of riding exactly are you doing with this set up? Training on the road, training on trails? Road racing? Time trials? Short triathlons? LD triathlons? Commuting to work? Doing errands on the bike?

Serious questions.

Believe they are rating your poor attempt at trolling the forum.

And yes, I agree with their ratings.

Regular tennis/running shoes.

No problems. Actually more comfortable because you can make slight adjustments.

I’m not trolling at all. Not sure why you would think that. Looks like you’re in the asshole club as well. Only an asshole would take the time to read and then do some kind of “rating”. Why would you do that? So many options available, including ignoring the post.

I know why, because you and the other two are assholes.

I use flat pedals for a lot of more leisurely rides. I started with RAGBRAI – a week of on and off riding, walking the bike through crowds, 30+ hours on the bike – wearing sport sandals in complete comfort all week.

I’ve used flats in a couple of sprint triathlons. The time saved in T2 is more than anything “lost” on the bike for lack of clipping in. The only time I noticed a difference was in the steepest part of two hills, and that wasn’t enough for me to want to use clipless the next year.

My partner rides MTB and 'cross on flat pedals. People give her shit about it, but she knows better than to listen to them.

If you need to be clipped in there’s something wrong with your pedal stroke.

I switched from a carbon tri bike to this.

In fact, it handles much better and the rolling momentum means it is faster for less watts once up to speed.

Clip-in pedals do provide advantages over flat, depending on what you consider an advantage. Extra power is not one of them for me, as I have no intention of “pulling up” on the back side of the pedal stroke.

  1. shoes attached to bike speeds transition in races
  2. cycling specific shoes with rigid soles feel better while riding
  3. no worry of my feet falling off the pedal if I get tired and lose concentration
  4. set your desired foot position over the pedal, and you don’t have to worry about it again

I’m sure there are plenty of other reasons but that’s my $0.02

Some equipment can make a big difference. Some not so much.

Not questioning the value of equipment is an expensive mistake. Making fun of those who do is silly and rude.

Unless you swim in your shoes, the time you saved in T2 is time you lost in T1.

I’m surprised that you’re so surprised…
