how much are you losing is you buy the flashpoint 60’s instead of zipp 404’s. they are 170 grams heavier (big deal), but are you losing anything else? you save like $500. do the dimples make a difference? is there any other differences between them between weight, dimples and $?
404’s are $1900 and the FP 60’s are $1100.
Do dimples matter? Of course not. Save the $800 and do something fun with it.
is there any other differences between them between weight, dimples and $?
flashpoints have crossed spokes vs radial on zipp, may also have a few more spokes. I would expect the FPs to be a bit stronger as a result and have had good performance from mine.
I believe the 404 is a different (or newer) hub. What are you losing? Not much. What are you gaining? About $800. I love my FP’s. Seriously, if you’re missing a Kona spot by less than a minute or two its probably worth it, otherwise, you’ll fly on the FP60’s.
Zipp wheels go for those last few very expensive seconds that most of us don’t need to worry about. In this case those seconds cost $800
and the real design supersonic 60’s are the same exact wheel as the flashpoint 60’s right?
Think the Flashpoints represent a pretty good deal as do Prolite Gavia’s:

two things:
i ride clinchers
the flashpoints are 10mm deeper
.
Good point. The Gavias are available in clincher soon (30 days) but despite that I think the Flashpoints are actually a relatively proven wheel. I’ve had a set and they were nice.
I PM’d you with another option Sir.
"the flashpoints are 10mm deeper "
A minor point - not arguing in favor of the Zipps, but I don’t think the flashpoints are 10mm deeper.
flashpoints = 60 mm
zipp 404s = 58 mm
(as per their respective websites)
He was referring to the Pro Lite Gavia tubulars vs. Flashpoint 60s.
If you want real race wheels, buy tubulars, the FP60s are just as aero, but are much heavier at the rim and clincher only. I just raced a set of borrowed FP 60s today in a TT and yestarday in a Road Race (which I won). The hubs on the FP60s are really quite good, but 404 clinchers or FP60s are much heavier compared to tubular 404s. I suggest the 404 tubulars only b/c they are much lighter at the rim and climb and accellerate much better. If the FP60s came in a tubular, I would buy the FP60s. However, if you just want a set of clincher aero wheels go with the FP60s, if you can find an equivalent set of Mavic Cosmic Carbones or HED Jet 60 (most likely), they really aero too; the mavics have the best hubs and have aluminum rims (better breaking), but the Heds are more aero.
to me weight doesn’t matter that much. the difference between the fp60’s and the 404’s is about 170 grams. that’s five oz. so i can gain five ounces or save $800. and when you’re fifteen and saving to buy a car, $800 is a lot. so, for right now, i’d rather save money that grams
If going clincher, the Flashpoints present a very good value for race day wheels
