Fizik Arione - Numbness on turbo

I have a fizik Arione Tri which I use on my TT bike. I think its a great saddle and seems to fit me well.

The main issue I have is that I find my luggage getting numb when riding it on the turbo (It feels a bit tender for the first 30 seconds sometimes and then I settle into the saddle). No pain, I just noticed the other day when re-adjusting myself, it was a little numb. Feeling comes back very quickly after getting off the turbo.

I was wondering if anyone has tried this saddle, experienced the same thing and moved onto anything else? I was wondering if the Versus model would perhaps provide some relief… Ideally I would stay with the fizik arione, but I have also looked at something like the cobb v flow… I am a little reluctant though to try lots of saddles out… TT specific ones seem expensive!

Cheers

I had that saddle and had the same problem. I didn’t realize I was numb once and darn there rubbed the skin off my junk. I switched to the ISM Adamo Race II. No issues. Adamo takes a few rides to get your sit bones adjusted and you’re good to go.

I am reluctant to go the the adamo due to the width of the nose and hearing how it can cause chafing. I seem to have narrow hips.

Everyone’s junk get numb on the turbo, ride it more it will improve. I think there is “some” discomfort level to be expected from riding a bike in aero position.

I have the Versus on my road bike. I’m happy with it overall. I think it has helped with numbness but I can still get a little ‘sleepy pee-pee’ sometimes. Not as bad as I used to. I also lowered my seat a fraction which probably helped more. On my TT bike (B2), I still use the stock Felt saddle slanted slightly off-center and this seems to work fine.

The problem with the trainer is that you may be sitting still for too long. Sometimes you need to move around to keep the circulation down there. Scoot forward and back every few minutes, etc.

you’ve got to make yourself stand up more

you put way more continuous pressure on the saddle when riding inside on the trainer.

I think there is an absolute sweet spot on the arione. I had to angle it down, just barely past horizontal. Once i had that dialed in, no more numbness. That and standing up for 30 Sec. or so every 15 min. Haven’t had any problems since.

I think it is pretty common to have numbness issues on the trainer but if your junk is getting numb after 30 seconds you need to get things figured out fast.

If you are talking about a turbo trainer then the story is fairly common. If you had a scale on your saddle and checked it indoors vs outdoors you would weigh more on the saddle indoors.

There is not substitute for finding the right saddle for YOU. Get on the SwitchIT and try as many as possible.

Even Dan says if you are a bike shop and you do not have a SwitchIt you are a fool. Here is the video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IjHq1z3U8u4&feature=plcp

Go to a shop with the SwitchIT. NOTHING can beat it.

I have a simple fix. Don’t ride the turbo more than an hour. If you are using it for long 2-4 hour grinds, you’ll grow to hate the sport and quit. I have been racing at a high level since the mid '80’s (2 Olympic Trials on the road) and NEVER do a trainer workout over 45 minutes. Trainer workouts are always short and intense. Save the long rides for outdoors. That said, standing every 5-10 minutes will help you. I use the Tri2 and like it a lot.

I guess you live in some place like california but how do you do those long outside workout when it’s already under 30f, I can’t seem to not freeze or be able to ride/brake over snow. Teach me master. lol

so yeah, trainer is my only option unless I get a pugsley or some mtb with studded tire and to be honest with you. Meh. no interest in freezing outside and breaking an hip or something because of some ice.

I avoid all things Arione after I experienced numbness in my junk.

Numbness means you’ve got a lack of blood flow, which is still bad even if it’s not going completely numb on short rides.

My advice: find another saddle that works for you ASAP.
