Right now I’ve got 2 bikes right now - P3 and a Giant TCR Composite. I’ve always wanted to go fixie and I can’t decide if I should part with the TCR and go the fixed gear route. I can’t afford financially or spacially to house another bike in my studio apartment and was hoping for some sage advice from the ST crew.
I love the TCR, but being in the NW would love a fixie to use as a dedicated rain/nasty bike as well as a potential commuter.
Any thoughts? If I do go the fixed gear route - anyone interested in a TCR Composite with D/A 9spd?
My advice is to convert the Giant to a fixie, then if you decide that you dont like fixed you can convert back. The best way is to buy a white industries eno hub. Have it laced into a wheel. Remove the old wheel, and deraillers. put a single speed specific front chainring on using shorter bolts and a new singlespeed chain. Adjust rare brake, ride.
Tough call - consider that the roadie will be more versatile, but that fixies are hella cool. I like the idea of converting it so that you can swap back and forth with just a few hours’ work.
Suck it up and ride in the rain - bikes aren’t museum pieces.
Keep the TCR. What a great road bike. You’d miss it for sure. You can make a fixie out an old lugged steel 12 sp. In fact they pop up on ebay cheaply every now and then.
Besides, then you’ll have three bikes. And as well all know on this forum, you can never have enough bikes.
