I have a 3 year old Kickr Snap that just stopped working. It’s out of warranty but Wahoo offered to replace the drive unit for $300 which hopefully fixes the problem. I’m considering using this as an opportunity to upgrade to a direct drive trainer and avoid all the issues with wheel on trainers (spin downs, tire wear, correct tension, etc).
Thoughts and or recommendations on a direct drive under $1000?
Assuming the $'s are not a problem, I’d probably go direct drive. The Kickr Core is supposed to be great (see DC Rainmaker review), the newest generation is really quiet and you won’t wear out your tires. The tires aren’t a huge deal in the big picture I know but still… You’d also be replacing a 3 yr old unit, these things should last longer but it is an upgrade. Also you said replacing the unit ‘hopefully’ fixes the problem. If it doesn’t then you are out $300
wahoo kickr core sounds good but there are many even cheaper. elite has the direto ($849) and zumo ($699). clevertaining has their VIP sale at 20% off so you can get those even cheaper.

Folks keep posting about Clever’s 20% off for trainers, but when I log into my VIP account, and add any trainer to the cart, there is no discount taken.
In the fine print of the 20% sale:
Discount not valid on select GPS technology, activity trackers, action cameras, bike accessories, power meters, cycle trainers,
