Fitting 2 bikes into a hatchback without too much disassembly?

Hi all,

Been wondering about this one for a while. Has anyone successfully fit 2 bikes into a compact-sized hatchback (think Subaru Impreza hatchback, Ford Focus hatchback, etc.) without taking either the seatpost or fork off? Wheel removal is fine but I HATE messing with the actual mechanics of my bike right before a race.

And I really, really, really don’t want to put 'em on the roof for a long highway drive.

Thank you!

Should be able to easily do it with front wheels off, I have done it in a Toyota Corolla before, they are all around the same size. I can fit bikes in my mini with both wheels off.

I put 3 bikes in the back seat of my Ford Focus with just the front wheels taken off.

Of course my bikes are 47cm and smaller. What size are you riding?

With the seats up, it could get a bit challenging depending on the car. I have always had sub compact hatches (Honda Fit etc), so you might have more space than me. I have done it with just the 40% folded, both wheels off, but that was a bit of a challenge and two bikes would be hard. Seats folded it is no problem, even on sub compact hatches.

Piece of cake in a honda fit with just the front wheels off…size 54.

One 54cm and one 48cm (friend’s) are the bikes I’m looking to fit
.

I have a Honda Fit as well. I took both my road bike and tri bike to the local bike fitters last Monday. I just took the front wheel off both bikes and they stand up in the back. Hooked the rear seat belt around each front wheel and I was good to go. Both bikes are size 52.

I also drive to all my races. Been to Whistler, Wisconsin, Lake Tahoe (twice), Muskoka and Coeur d’Alene. I put the bike in the back with all my gear and there is still room for me to lay down a therma-rest and a sleeping bag and sleep in the back. The gas mileage is also amazing. I love my Fit.

I have had three bikes and three people in my little B series.
Just take the wheels off.

I’ve routinely put a road bike and time trial bike in my Focus Hatchback by just removing the front wheel. They lay on top of each other, though (separated by padding and all).

One bike fits easily into the back of an Impreza with the front wheel still on. If I want to get two in there I remove the front wheels, lay one bike down, lay a heavy blanket over it, then lay the other on top of it and make sure nothing bangs the derailleurs.

Edit to add: Obviously this is with the back seats down

Ah, thanks! What kind of padding do you use?

I have a Scion iM and can lay my tri bike in the back fully assembled without removing the rear parcel shelf. When I carry more than one bike in there laid down I usually pad between the two with a padded vinyl-backed picnic blanket and a pillow. Depending on whose bikes I’m carrying, sometimes I can slide them in along the edges upright with the front wheels off (my largest bike is a 47 and my seat is not terribly high though, so YMMV).

Very easily, I have a Ford Focus and can easily firt two bikes in there. Often have two bieks in there. My bikes are XL (60cm) frames too. Usually just whip the wheels off and put them in, I would put one with teh dropouts faceing one side of the car and the other with the dropouts facing the otehr side, wheels ontop. I keep an old blanket in the back which is good to lay between the bikes/wheels - wheel bags are very useful.

If I’m just traveling with one bike I can get it in with the back wheel on and the seatpost up too (saddle height of 85cm).

Honda Civic sedan.

put down something to cover the seats, take the wheels off, and they’ll easily fit upright in the back seat. My saddle height is around 74 cm.

I can fit 2 bikes that way pretty easily, never tried 3.

I use an old white queen size bed cover/quilt that was about to be tossed. It is now covered in grease spots since my bike lays chain up and my wife’s bike lays chain down during transport (so the handle bars are not on top of each other but they are both loaded facing out). Works great.

I fit 2 in the back of my GTI all the time by just taking the front wheels off (I can fit 1 bike with both wheels on). I ride a 56cm and I’m about 6’ tall. My 29er MTB is a little tight, but i can still fit 2 if the MTB is on bottom.

I put a workout mat (like a thicker yoga mat) between bikes.

I just roll my bikes into my Honda Element fully assembled, wheels on. Love it.

Why put them in the car.
/pink Suit up in full race gear w/wetsuit and ride to the race /pink

Take of front wheel bike one.
Put in car.
Put padding in place.
Take of front wheel of bike two.
Put in car.
Throw in front wheels.
Get in car.
Adjust stereo.
Enjoy!

If you what the recepy in .Pdf it can be arranged. 😂

Fit 2 60cm Kestrel Talons in a 2013 Chevy Sonic Hatch.

Take off the front wheel and back wheel of each bike. Lay one in, lay a blanket over it, lay the other bike in rotated 180 degrees to ensure you are not putting any pressure onto either the front or rear derailleur. Lay a blanket over that bike, then set the wheels on top of the pile.

Cram suitcases around the bikes where you can.

Roll down windows.

Crank radio.

I have a Subaru Impreza hatchback and can fit one bike with no disassembly and two bikes with the front wheels removed, although they need to be stacked with a thick blanket or cushion in between them.
