Looking for some help. Have a knee measuring device but apparently don’t know how to use it. Please don’t criticize the position too much, middle age time trialer, not tri guy. If someone would be kind enough just to measure the various angles it would be appreciated. Constructive suggestions for the fit would be welcome too. Fit is a work in progress. I was really low but could not make any power. Then a crash and back to scratch. Want to start with the seat first. Thanks in advance.
You should really post a video and not stills. Your leg for instance isn’t at full extension in that photo so the knee angle pulled from it isn’t going to be very accurate. Video also shows other things like excessive rocking or hitches in your pedal stroke or clearance issues at the top of the stroke as well as allowing a full set of angles to be pulled.
That said here’s the eyeball angles I get from your still photo with the understanding that your knee angle at full extension is likely a few degrees larger than what’s shown here:
You can pull the angles yourself with this free software: http://www.kinovea.org/
And you can get an idea of anatomic reference points and typical angles here: http://bikedynamics.co.uk/FitGuideTT.htm

i think you measured pretty well on the proxy for the hip angle that seems to use the landmarks we use. shoulder, i’m guessing you’re measuring slightly obtuse of where you actually are, but you’re close. knee, as has been noted, you’re a little past BDC but it doesn’t look bad to me.
Thanks but I am confused. 132 knee angle, so I see where recommended is somewhere between 145-150, which means the saddle is too low right?
This is confusing as I am way higher formula-wise (.883inseam) or 1.09 to pedal spindleinseam.
Thanks in advance. I have had numerous fittings, but I am a poor client and change them anyway. Not much matter as they have mostly been very different from each other, enough to question the process, thus me changing it all the time.
my range, for tri, is 138 to 146. and you’re past bottom dead center. .883 is low for road and lower yet for triathlon.
Hey Dan, since attending the FIST clinic in 2008, I have tried to keep up with everything you have written. This is the first reference I have found to a 138 - 146 degree range for tri bike knee angles. Of course I could have missed it, but I am still going off 145-150, (152-153 as an absolute upper limit). This is what is described in your 2007 article on seat height as well as what I was taught by you way back when.
So my question…what did I miss?
