Fish Oil Experts

What is the optimal dosage? There does not seem to be much agreement on this in what I have read.

I take it for cardio vascular benefits and anti-inflamitory benefits.

I take a concentrated version from Costco. The 1200 mg pill has 684 mg of Omega 3 fatty acids (EPA 410 mg, DHA 274 mg). The label says take one per day.

Is more better?

My doc prescribed 4 grams per day. For high cholesterol. Not all fish oils are equal. I take prescription-only Lovaza.

Yeah, $3360 per year vs. $150 for the same quantity of stuff. My organic chem PhD buddy tells me it is one of the bigger scams.

4 grams of what? The overall pill size or the actual Omega 3 fatty acids?

Do you have an opinion on how much a person should take?

I take the same thing (1200mg, 684mg of Omega 3 fatty acids) from Costco. Once per day only, although I think newer research calls for more.

The data are starting to pile up about inflammation and endothelial issues, so it is the only pill I take at all.

COuld you anticipate any negative effects if I doubled down to 2x daily?

No ill effects and there aren’t any drug interactions at all that I’m aware of. I think the dosing is somewhat dependent on what you are taking it for. Just for general cardioprotective/vascular effects vs. triglyceride reduction for example that needs a higher dose I think.

how does eating fish daily compare to the pill? We have mojarra daily so I didn’t think I needed the pill (guessing they are farmed though as we’re pretty fished out locally here). My other choice is canned salmon (which is supposed to be wild).

Shoot for 2,000 mg of Omega 3 per day. Best to split that up, twice a day works. Some of the bodybuilding sites recommend more for weight/fat loss, but other than their sites I don’t think anyone else is suggesting increased fat loss from fish oil. If I’m wrong on that let me know. I’m looking for a easy way to loose fat.

Just be sure it’s ‘molecularly distilled’ to remove the mercury.

I take 4 tablespoons of carlson’s fish oil daily… been doing it for 2 years

before you ask why…

EPA ethyl ester

Indirectly/directly it may:

-improves fatty acid metabolism and energetics in muscle (fat loss)

-reverses many of the metabolic issues of insulin resistance and type II diabetes

-slows down ubinquination of cells and impedes less lysis (hypertrophic growth is more cells added over those broken down).

-causes neuronal repair

-it can be tranported and can even cross the blood brain barrier, also acts protectively on long axon neurons in the spinal column.

-shown to be effective in liver lipid control (cholesterol control agent).

-control myoblast (early myocyte) differentiation

-upregulate cell production and slow down cell turnover

-proteasome activity (IkB-α protein expression, and NFkB DNA-binding activity) in serum.

-EPA EE and its effect (change) on IL-6 and its role in mytostatin controls.

-The process of IL-6 control seems to be tied to control of ROS/Oxidative damage in the cells resulting from improved fatty acid metabolism and the oxygen free radicals that result a

The costco brand I use is filtered and from deep water ocean fish (no farmed).

I don’t know how much Omega 3 you get from eating fresh. My guess would be not as much as a concentrated pill.

How does it taste?

If i could, I’d rather inject the stuff with a 21g needle… I usually chase it down with some of that lemon juice concentrate.

We use Swanson EFA which contain Flax, Borage and Fish Oil, both my wife and my triglycerides have benefited. I have heard that Krill Oil is very good for you.

its all the rage now… but bang for your buck fish oil is fine

my hdl is around 100, ldl under 40 & triglycerides almost non existent.

Wow, that seems like a huge dose. You really take 4 table spoons per day? That’s 2 ounces per day or nearly a bottle per week.
At $20/bottle that’s $1000 per year. Yikes!!!
