First Timer

To Kenny and all the Athletes that have stayed at the Garden Motel in CDA Id. You have done it, you turned this couch potatoe into a wanna be IM. This is Jerry (Husband of the manager, Hope). I have been training for 6 weeks now and have completed my first 56 mile ride in 3 hrs 49 min with an old Huffy Ironman mountain bike, I know, its slow but I didn’t think I would make it, now I’m hooked, buying a new bike next week. My question to you all is how much riding do you do in a week along with the running and swimming? Hope to see you all again at the motel for another pre race Bar B Que. Thanks, Jerry

No guts, no glory

There’s a good thread going a little further down about bare minimum of time needed to do a triathlon (usually sprint distance, which is really short, or Olympic distance which is classically a 1500m swim, 24.9 mile bike and 6.2 mile run). It makes for interesting reading.

Check out Gale Bernhardts book “training plans for multisport athletes” It’s got some great, easy to follow plans geared for each distance and various levels of time commitment. I think most of her IM plans peak out at about 16-18 hours with about half of that on the bike and 1 5-6 hour ride. There’s also Gordo Byrn’s website with tons of good info and he also has a book specifically about IM racing and training called “going long”.
