First PT on the way but

I have no head unit to pair it with as funds didnt quite stretch that far (but got in on a special offer :))

It’s going on the trainer to begin with so no issues as I will pair it with Trainerroad in the meantime. But, will it work without a head unit to calibrate it before each ride etc? Any problems I should expect?

Cheers!

If it rests at “0” when you stop pedalling, all is good!

What atomic says is wrong. You should also make sure that the torque offset is within spec. That is 500-524. If it’s a new wheel it will be but if it’s old or used you might wanna check from time to time. I just had to replace mine after 10 months and it’s not too uncommon that it get’s out of spec.

Thanks for that, its a new wheel so from what you say I should be ok… just a little disappointed that it might be out of spec within 1 year! Presumably this isn’t terminal if it does that, you’d just have to account for it when comparing in order to get a like for like comparison?

So, I should be ok until March/April when I’ve saved enough pennies for a 500 … cool

Yes you should def be ok. My advice is to set a reminder on your calendar before the 1 yr warranty is over to check your torque. W/o warranty it’s $350 which is kinda pricey.

How do you make sure that the torque offset is within spec without a head unit?

You can’t. My guess is the cheapest would be an ANT+ stick which is ~$30 IIRC. But then… why would you have a PT w/o a head unit?

Did you not read the original question, the reason for my first post?

If the hub is out of spec it’s wrong and needs to be re-serviced. It’s not a matter of correcting for a particular offset vs another hub.

Can’t you just borrow another head periodically?

Oh, I’ll have one in about a month, just jumped on a discount which brought it in line with the USD price withoutbthe possible hassle of UK customs slapping extra on. Just wanted to know if I’d have any initial problems using it with trainer road via ANT+ without having a head unit for an initial calibration. Which from Aralo’s response above, looks like I’ll be fine.

Cheers again

Get a head at least one just to check. Why assume it’s right when you can easily test it?
