I just found out I was lied to. I was out of town last week. Had some time to kill, saw an ASICS sale sign on the window to a franchise store called the Finish Line.
I’ve always bought my running shoes at a local speciality store but here I could save nearly $30. I’m an easy sale, no need to fit me. I know what I what. Asics Kayano 14. Size 12.5
I was waited on by the manager, he said Asic’s don’t come in half sizes. “Really” I said pointing to my feet. “Here’s a retired pair size 12.5”. He then proceded to tell me that the Kayano’s don’t come in half sizes and pointed out that I was wearing 2110’s. Alright, currently I have a pair of Kayano’s that are my newest and a pair of 2130’s which are about up I could swear that both were 12.5’s. My retired 2110’s and 2120’s I know are 12.5’s…So I tried on a pair of 12’s…too small. And the 13’s are just a smidgin larger than I’d like but they seemed to fit. I did a lap around the store, felt alright but before purchasing I clarified that the Kayano’s don’t come in half sizes.
2 nice 4 milers no problem…an easy 6 yesterday…no problem but I could feel just the slightest heel slip. A good strong 10 miler today…strong until mile 8 where I developed my 2nd ever blister from running. The only other blister I ever got was on a crazy cross country run…through fields, and streams etc. I wore a old worn out pair of shoes and after the 3rd river crossing, running in soaked shoes and muddy socks it was bound to happen.
So now I have a pair of $120 (sale price) shoes with 24 miles on them purchased from a franchise with the nearest store 2.5 hrs away and I just verified that the Kayano’s do come in 1/2 sizes.
Is this going to be a right off? Just send a nasty gram to Finish Line and keep the shoes for short runs? Open to suggestions

I’d look at their website for a resolution/contact us section and go from there. Definitely I’d follow up on it.
I have been wearing the same brand shoe for the last few years also. I have always bought from my local store to give him
support, even though I assume I could get cheaper off the internet. I saw them at Boston for a lot less money, but decided
to just stay with my local guy and get local support. I know if I have an issue, I am just a 20 minute drive to fix the issue.
Put them back in the box and try to return them to Dick’s or Sports Authority. Those large stores usually don’t question things. Tell them that the guy put you in the wrong size shoe. I have done that a few times and never had a problem with them accepting my exchange. Last time they didn’t even open the shoe box.
I was going to buy a new pair of asics recently, so I checked a pair in the closet to be sure of size (I was wearing sandals at the time). So I go to the store wearing a diff pair of asics & the guy picked on up & said “size 9.5 I see?”. I said, no, they are 9.0’s. He says no they are not, look. So I called my wife quick & she confirmed the size of the ones in the closet.
So all this time I have been wearing two diff sizes of the same damn model & never realized it. And each pair has a couple hundred miles. So…well…huh.
Could it be that he meant that Asic’s don’t come in half sizes at this store.
Some people say anything to make a sale.
That might actually be true, though. I checked the online store, and it might be that they’re just out of stock (they’re on sale), but there were no half-sizes above 12 in any color.

So go from being a customer who had bad service to being a theif…huh…I would rather keep my honor and the wrong size shoes.
(But, I never ever shop at “Richards” as I call “Dicks” and would never give them business as long as small local stores are here)

I think you hit the nail on the head there. Most of the big box stores don't want to mess with 12.5's for men or 10.5's for women. FWIW Kayano's are even made in size *13.5*.

and to the OP, sounds like you’re just going to have to pay a “stupid tax” on this one. (another) lesson learned.

As a former running shop employee, I don’t think this would consititute stealing. If the customer asks for a refund, I would agree - but on the exchange, not really.
The store is not eating the loss on the old shoes - they get returned to asics, and get credited for their cost. Asics will have to eat that cost regardless of where the shoe is returned ‘Richard’s’ gets their merch replaced, and doesn’t lose on it.
it might be a questionable practice (taking advantage of a different retailer), but I wouldn’t call it stealing.
To the OP though, I would bitch up a storm to the Finish Line national office. For as much as you apparently asked about the sizing, the manager should have told you they just didn’t have what you needed. It may be his job to sell stuff, but I would say that’s crossing the line. I don’t know what would come of it, but i think i would feel better,

X3 That is plain wrong. Send them back to “RETURNS” at Finish Line and deal with their customer service people. Tell them you have posted this story on a very widely read forum where the users buy lots of running shoes, and make flat coke.

So you’re suggesting he construct a lie to effectively steal a new pair of shoes from Dick’s or Sports Authority?

On a different note, how is the blister? Did any of the suggestions help?
Another option is to take them into Richards(nice) and explain the situation. You may find a reasonable, understanding employee that will give you some love on an exchange. If this doesn’t work, I’d ask the manager on duty if there is anything they can do to help you out in this situation. I managed at a large corporation and many of these just want to take care of the customer no matter what. Many of these employees are enthusiasts and can probably relate to this situation. I can’t see them turning you down for an exchange if they sell the same shoes…
Contacted Finish Line Via Email…Most of their stores do not carry half sizes in any brand. They apologized for what they believe is a mis-understanding…That I didn’t understand it’s the store that does not carry half sizes, not that the manufacture doesn’t make half sizes.
They are willing to exchange the shoes. Allow 2 -3 weeks so they can order the 12.5’s. Finish Line would appreciate it if I handled it through the store that I purchased them from but could exchange thru any store and since the shoes were purchased at a sale price, full price would probably apply and I would need to pay the difference. (That part is up to the local store). Directions were to forward a copy of the email to the store I handle the exchange with.
So…shipping, add $8 - $10. Full Price vs Sale price add $25 so now my shoe investment went from $120 to $155…I don’t think so. I don’t know if they will charge me for return shipping.
Call the local speciality store, explain what happened. They tell me to bring the shoes in and they will exchange them no-charge. They have 3 pair of 12.5’s in stock.

Just like the negative publicity for Finish Line, let’s hear what this great local store is. You never know who may live in the area, or even just be visiting the area, that would like to shop there because they obviously care about the customer!

Yep.
Large corporation - Stocks what is convenient for them, and upon discovering a mistake, will fix it at extra cost to the customer.
Local store - Sure, we’ll do anything we need to make it right.
