So i crossed the line at IMWI on sunday night. The months, and days leading up to the race i thought about crossing the tape. I thought if i was running near a guy/girl i would stop so they would get to cross the tape alone so they could have the glory and i am sure i make a great photo, and i would like to think someone would do the same for me.
Well i am coming down the finishing chute, i turn around 3 times and see a guy running down with his kids and he is in no hurry. I hear Mike yell my name, i put my arms up as i hit the tape all of a sudden i feel a guy next to me crossing the line the SAME time as me. I was in SHOCK that he would do such a thing. I bet my finishing photo (which i haven’t seen yet) is me looking at this guy in total disbelief. I am calling him out right now his name is Kyle Johnson and he is from Green Bay WI, if anyone knows him i would like him to say he is sorry.
Oh yeah i forgot to mention i crossed the line at 16:20:47, it’s not like it was 13:59 and he wanted to break the 14 hr mark or something.
am i coming off bitter??? good cause i am!!! but that’s all i am being bitter about, everything else about the whole IM experience was GREAT!
thanks for reading.
Excelent post…I bet Slowman kills the guys name…but I agree with you 100%.
What a co-ink-e-dink, we were JUST talking about this sort of stuff yesterday!!! Time to dredge up the post!
Pretty sad.
What the heck, I bet that Slowman not only kills the guys name, he kills the guy.
I think I actually saw you finish, was yelling for you, and I don’t think you felt much like acknowledging the crowd, and watched you all the way to the finish and saw this guy come sprinting out of no where. I felt for you then, I wanted to make my way back to the finisher’s area and see what this guy was thinking. If that wasn’t you, then I saw exactly what happened to you happen to someone else within minutes of you. Great job though, I was never so happy to hit a finish line in all my life.
Are you kidding me? You’re “bitter” that someone else finished at the same time as you, and “ruined” your finish line photo?
Someone is going to have to explain to me why we’re entitled to cross the finish line all alone, and what the heck is so darned important about that picture, anyway.
You know, Ironman is a RACE and not a photo-opt.

Then why was his freakin kids with him running down the chute?
Ditto.
I am amazed that someone who was walking 15 minutes before had the need to ruin your finish with a sprint.
When I did IMLP this year all of the folks around me were staging out on the street prior to making the entrance into the oval.
I just asumed that it was understood that the last 440 yards is not the place to make up time. That F–ing guy had all day to sprint why then.

I’m confused. Is the poster upset because someone else finished the same time, or because the kids were there?
Vitus and neotri,
If this is the same guy, then he was running down the chute easy, enjoying the moment, and the other guy literally sprinted down the chute and almost knocked kleinrider down at the finish line. I don’t know about anyone else, but if you spend 16 hrs out in a race, those last few seconds can’t be so critical that you almost knock down a fellow competitor who also just survived a grueling day. To me, that is just being courteous, which is severely lacking in our sport all too often.

The guy who crossed at the same time is not the guy who was behind him with his family.
If the original poster had mentioned even a word about “almost being knocked down” at the finish line, I’d be up in arms right along with you. But the original poster didn’t say any such thing.
Have 'ya seen this thread?
Get ready for a firestorm

I think it depends. For that first IM finish, (as I just had) that picture is worth quite a bit. More than can maybe be described. Everyone is different though. But along the first line, you are correct, it is a race and first to the line wins.
As far as the kids are concerend see yesterday’s post for my feelings on that one

thanks, sorry if i wasn’t clear… the guy who finished the same time as me was not the guy with the family.

To each his own, I guess. Is your’s framed, or something?
And be that as it may, I really do not understand this sense of entitlement that people have about being the only person in their picture. It isn’t even representative of the moment, for crying out loud.
grr this makes me angry, im a triathlete for solo photo finish! thats what i am!
