Is it legal to use in race for swim pacing?

How is something beeping in your ear going to help you pacing in open water? I am genuinely curious.

Because, having done testing, I know what different frequencies of beeps give me certain paces. Admittedly, the pool is very different from open water but the similarities are still there. Plus, it keeps my stroke constant as opposed to what happens to me when I tire (higher frequency/shorter/less powerful)

You use it differently than I do. I set it to the time I want to hold per lap / length (depending on pool I go to). I tried using it per stroke, didn’t see the point.

As for being legal, I think the general premise regarding triathlon swims is anything that aids your propulsion / buoyancy (except wetsuit) is disallowed. Based on that, it should be OK. IIRC, for for swim meet competition there is a rule for disallowing timing devices.

If you do decide to use it, watch out that your swimcap doesn’t come off, otherwise that sucker is sinking to the bottom.

In theory it’s not legal, since USAT rules prohibit audio devices during the race. They specifically went after pace beepers because they irritate the crap out of people around you. This was really an issue on the run with beeping GPS watches (I’m not sure if other swimmers can hear the Finis). I really doubt they’d penalize you for using it on the swim, but there’s always the chance of running into an anal/literalist official.

I have been told that they are not legal in races.

When asked what it is I often compare it to a piano metronome. I use mine all the time. I think the general consensus is that most people hate them at first and think they’re annoying but I’ve grown to love mine and even caught myself making up the beeping in my head during my last race to get my arms turning over quicker.

Yea, I bought mine back in the winter and used it a bit but wasn’t very enamored. I just took it out again a week ago and can now really see the value in using it. I’m a fan.

I love mine. But was told at Florida 70.3 it is not legal. I use mine in training to keep me on pace without looking at my watch. Trying to stay on 25 second 25s so wet it an know that I am ahead of the beeps.

I also like it for intervals instead of looking at the clock or watch. I am a big fan. I keep mine in my swim cap.
