Just curious to see what people thought about the above or if there is something better. Seems nice to have to throw in once a while. I see some really fast swimmers using it sometimes at the pool. This one looks like it is designed specifically for free-style swimmers, is there a better one? Thanks!

I have this and like it. I have the cardio cap on it to restrict airflow…which is the primary reason I bought it. However, after using it a few times, I found I could really concentrate on my body form without having to come up for air every 3rd stroke. If you get one, buy a nose plug…it’s pretty tough to breath in through your mouth underwater and keep pressure in your nose. You can do it…but it is alot easier with a nose plug.
I started using one while swimming competitively in college. I found it to be the single best tool for isolating a particular element of your technique and focusing on it without having to break your rhythm to breath. For example I use a snorkel every time I do a pull set and can focus much better on all the elements of efficient pulling without interruption. I highly recommend it.
Highly recommend it. Just breath; while you concentrate on stable core and balanced stroke.
Agreed - I’d even go so far and say single best tool period. I think this snorkel allows you to develop proper hydrodynamics (like being aero on the bike). Here is a post I made on another forum explaining what I mean. My wife said the Aussies use this snorkel a ton, so I grabbed one off the shelf here and have been working with it the last 2 months. I would say 70% snorkel, 30% bilateral time.
“Picture for a moment two “imaginary” tracks or rails about 8” or 10" apart down the length of the pool. Submerged about 6" or so under the surface.
Now swim with one palm or the other always in contact with the rail. As if you need to have your hand on them to get your electrical power, like a trolley car.
So the right hand when you are sweeping or stroking with the left, the left hand when you are sweeping or stroking with the right.
The steadier and more consistently your hands can be placed on the rail, with outstretched straight arms, the faster you’ll be. The larger radius your stroking arm draws, the faster you’ll be, Plain and simple.
the best way the above is experienced is using a FINIS snorkel because you can concentrate on a symmetrical, repetitive movement. "

X2 on the nose plug. I nearly drowned the first time I used it. Rally good to balance the stro

Well I am convinced, thanks for the input.

I have the regular swimmer’s snorkel and the freestyle snorkel. I prefer the swimmer’s snorkel, the mouthpiece is softer and it has a valve to expel water. The freestyle version is more aggressively shaped, so you get a mouthful of water if you aren’t well balanced (the pipe loops back over your head a bit). Also buy the cardio cap at the same time. This restricts airflow which gives you a better workout.

I love mine. I use it for warm ups and also when Im focusing on my catch and pull.
I second Bazil’s comments about the two models. I have the freestyle version and find it very usefull for drills and kick sets; however if it gets a little off center on your head or you are in a crowded lane, you can get a lot of water down the pipe.
My personal version is the more vertical one & has a purge valve. The pipe/chewy connection leaked so I had to wrap that in tape.
I never had to use a nose plug. Thought it would be a problem at first but did not have any issue from the get-go.
I have struck my recover hand on the tip from time to time. And I get water in the mouth pce I think from the mouth pce fit.
I used the more radically bent version (looks more square) yesterday and got water in the pipe a few times. Definitely more touchy that one.
I agree; a great tool, especially for pull sets. The only issue I have is that the rough section of the mount hurt my forehead! I thought about adding a neoprene piece to help cushion a bit more.
