“You see all these reports that steroids cause heart disease, cancer, strokes and so on,” said Dr. Norman Fost, a professor of bioethics at the University of Wisconsin. “Then it gets repeated over and over again. There is not a single study out there that proves steroids cause any of these diseases.”
I saw a documentary where the father in this article was confronted with the facts, but he didn’t let that stop him from saying that steroids killed his son.
Of course the article also doesn’t say that steroids don’t cause harm. It says that studies showing examining steroid abuse can’t or at least haven’t been done.
While its not a study look at the average life expectancy in sports where drug use has been most rampant. Bodybuilding, wrestling (the fake kind), football. Its not a pretty picture.

is it “use” or “abuse” of these substances that causes the problems?
there is no difference. Your body may take what you think is use and see it as abuse. For the uses some are advocating (like those seen in pro cycling) a persons body may not be compatible with even occasional use. Further, unless a trained medical professional is administering every treatment (not coming from a pill of course) it is far too easy to cross the line from even use to abuse.
There’s simply no ethical, healthy, or sporting way to advocate the use of any of these medicines except under valid medical need to treat injury or illness, not to better performance, ever.
Many would term using powerful drugs with no underlying condition “abuse”. Its almost certain that some peds at low enough dosages for some patients are safe. However its also true that some OTC medications, like asprin can be harmful to some individuals, even at low amounts.
PED use is never going to have the research and backing to insure that its 100% safe.
I really dont think the people that use PEDs really care one way or another about harmfull side effects of taking them so it shouldn’t change the arguement at all.

They may not, but as a viewing public, we might. Since sport, as entertainment, caters to its audience, our view on whether PEDs should be used or not informs the practices of the sport.
You may have extraordinary knowlege medical testing, but again you prove you know nothing of risk vs cause. All of these seem to suggest an increased risk. But not a cause.
This might be a Fox News article, but Fox News and not their commentary has proven to be less bias then other sources as substantiated by liberal advocacy groups. This is also not the first time I have heard this from medical professionals. I have also herd them state that any associated risk, that your test present are totally reversable after going off PED. I have also known a lot of people who have taken PED and none of them suffered irreversable symptoms. Cholestrol, BP, and cardiac changes, all reversed after going off steroids. I have yet to meet one person who suffered Roid Rage, that didn’t have emotional problems prior to taking steroids.
So you are defending the use of PEDs? If not, whats the point?
I’m not endorsing it. I just have always assumed that athletes will do whatever they can to get that edge. Including use of steroid. And frankly I don’t care. Having been a power lifter, boxer, and bodybuilder. I’m familiar with the PED culture. I have never used them personally, because I to bought into the risk, nor did I want to participate in illegal activity. But I have known many who have. I have yet to see one person suffer adverse consequences like high BP, high Cholestrol, minimal heart rythem changes that didn’t go away from proper taper and elimination of further use. But they also lost significant strength and size. I can tell you from personal experience that getting off the heavy weights and the related diet also lowered my BP, Cholestrol, etc.
The point is pros will always have access to the latest, greatest, and currently undetectable PED. That is why the WADA list is always growing. The people who suffer are the teenagers who do not have access to the safe stuff and doctors that can monitor their use. They buy this shit on the black market no knowing what they are doing. Sometimes they get veterenarian grade hormones that CAN kill you.
Let’s also not forget that there is a difference between use and abuse. The yuppie bodybuilder who isn’t competing or whose lively hood isn’t dependent on hitting a homerun probably has self esteem issue and a mentality that says, if this much works, this much more will work that much better. This is a fatal recipe, but how does banning PED prevent this.
I also do not think that PEDs make a champion, they give the guy the edge among other champions. But if they are all doing it, they are all on equal footing. Just make it transparent.
**You may have extraordinary knowlege medical testing, but again you prove you know nothing of risk vs cause. All of these seem to suggest an increased risk. But not a cause. **That was the case with smoking too, eventually, as everyone intuitively knew, that it was a cause for cancer in that case…it just took many years to prove. PED’s may follow the same pattern, if there are risks, something must have happened at some time to make PEDs in the “risk” category. I may risk cancer with smoking, might not get it if I smoked…

I’ll continue to eat slabs of bacon for the next 40 years everyday for every meal because the negative effects to my blood work is totally reversible…that makes no sense whatsoever. If any associated risks are reversible, hell, I’ll start my kids now. They can make millions, I’ll roll the dice on their health, and they can do what they want at age 35. Don’t make this sound like everything is ok with PEDs and treat it lightly. Are you hanging out with enough people to make a study of your conclusions? You seem to speculate a lot here and it seems very reckless.
The point is there has never been a direct link between steroid use and death. Like you hinted, eating bacon has similar health consequences with regard to BP and Cholestrol. There has never been a conclusive link between steroids and suicide and nearly every highly publicized case of steroid suicide, the person was seeking mental health treatment prior to their steroid use.
Nobody is debating that there are adverse effects to using some PED. In fact, I’ll say now, there probably are, and some pose a greater risk then others. But is it any greater then eating bacon, McDonalds, or consuming large numbers of Red Bull. None of the evidence I have read or interviews suggest so.
