FINA Aquatics World's Women's 400 Free on deck 27 July (Katie vs Summer)

Summer McIntosh has an ambitious program for FINA worlds’ Singapore with the 400 and 800 free plus 200IM, 400IM and 200 fly.

She set the 400 free world record at Canadian Trials (3:54.18) several weeks ago (along with world records in the 200IM and 400IM).

But she’s going to have to go head to head against Ledecky to get this meet rolling (no Ariane Titmus who is on a year off):

It’s Sunday evening Singapore time so 400m finals will be morning EDT.

Nice report in that link, thanks for posting. At the risk of seeming un-American, I hope Summer beat Ledecky in both the 400 and 800, and wins all five of her races. She’s a super talented young woman.

Looks like the women will be done around midnight EDT for the 400m heats and the finals go at 7:32 am EDT if anyone wants to know exact times

Tough break for Fearweather, just a tiny flinch on the blocks that only the cameras caught and she is out of the final. No real big times yet, but of course first day prelims. The US team was hit with a team wide food poisoning a few days ago, so lots of scratches and a couple horrible swims thus far. Gretchen seems ok, but Huske is out of the 100 fly and who knows going forward. Couple other scratches from probable finalists, but relays both made it in with fastest times. Sam Short looked great in the 400, is this his time to take it down??

Quick edit on times, the mens 100 breast was actually really fast for this early prelim(58+'s). This first race for top 16 was way faster than the olympic final. Just shows how slow that pool was for this particular stroke, and no doubt the next two swims in it will produce a bunch of 58’s or better…

Fairweather is a

Fairweather had a reaction time of 0.73 according to the on screen data. So a false start does not give a negative reaction time? and it picked up elsewhere?

I will have to go and watch the finals, but here are the top 4

Here is CBC coverage here in Canada. There is a link to the coverage of the event, but not sure you all can see without VPN:

incredibly easy win by Mcintosh. Fantastic comeback from Li Bingjie in the last 50 to pass both Ledecky and Pallister.

Li was 1.5 body lengths behind at 325m and still a full body length at 355m at the flags

Here are LI’s splits (note the final two 50’s):

Ledecky

McIntosh

I don’t believe it was she jumped, but just that she moved on the block after the take your mark command. And as can be seen in reaction time, it was not a movement that was part of the actual start… Its a tough one to swallow, but with the new video being used, not surprised that some ticky tack stuff is getting caught…

Unfortunately that’s a DQ. They’ve really come down hard on block flinches.

At the risk of sounding American, lol, i hope Summer wins everything too haha. She’s just a generational talent. But @monty i do want to see expansion to the 100s by LA. Can’t belive the food poison debacle… USAS needs to get kicked in the ass. They’re just terrible.

JOOC, what do you mean by “expansion to the 100s by LA”???

Go down and do the 100s, like Phelps could do in the 1 fly and then in the relays

Well, she’s already swimming 5 events so I don’t see any need to do say the 100 fly. She is perhaps more of a distance swimmer.

good event for a 12 year to focus on tbh

Phelps never did 400 free and 1500 free in the world events that he was medaling but I am certain he would have destroyed the world in the 400 free. The guy had the 400IM world record AND a 100 free 47.51 PB. I think given his 400IM endurance he’d have put the 1500m free world record way out of reach for decades.

Summer’s doing all the available distance events she can cram in. Would be interesting to see her in the 200 back/breast/free.

She does swim 100’s on Canadian relays (did so in Paris)

Right now she is, yes. I think those 18-22yo years is when she will get more sprinting ability. If she can transition from this mid-distance dominance and also over the next 2 Olympic quads be world class in say 100 fly/back and 100/200 free she will absolutely etch herself as GOAT.
