Felt IA FRD Cockpit Upgrades

Hi, anyone upgraded their Felt IA cockpit? I’m converting my mates IA and he wants his aero extensions angled upwards. Have been looking on aerocoach and drag2zero websites, just wondering what others have tried? Any pictures would be greatly appreciated.

I used angled wedges to tilt mine up with higher extensions.

I have a really low stack so limited as most solutions are higher than what I need.

If they’re interested in more than just an extensions/armcups upgrade, the Alpha One actually works very well with the IA with one tiny modification (trimming the top fairing bolt holes and securing in another way). Probably the lowest stack way to add tilt and you get the other adjustability benefits as well.

I assume you have grabbed a felt dagger stem that allows a non integrated front end, while still having the mounting surface for the brake cover?

No,the bike is still pretty much in its standard configuration with the base bar attached by the four bolts. Despite this being, at one time, a really expensive bike this is now third hand and to that end he doesn’t want to spend a tonne of money getting his desired ‘high hands’ position. I had not thought about the dagger stem, which I assume is from the lower spec’d IA models as you suggest. I like you’re thinking.

Basically I think you are going to not have many options.

The stem from the lower end Felt IAX lines without the integrated front end would fit on the bike, but the cover for the integrated brake would have nowhere to attach.

Felt sells a stem ( which is over $200 ) which they originally designed for pros who wanted to use aftermarket bars, as no other aftermarket bars could be installed otherwise. It also allows for the internal routing to continue through it as well.

It’s now available to the general public, but it’s costly for a stem.

After that you can install any standard 31.8 round bar.

Other option is to get different extensions and then adjust the tilt of the pads as discussed above, a discussion on this is available here:

Zipp Vuka seems to be a popular front end for this bike!

i machined some custom adapters to install the vision tfe pro bars on my felt ia

Looks like a very tidy setup

Hopefully my dual stack adapter for my csr+ will work.

???

You can also just buy some 7/8" OD pipe and bend to your liking. The 7/8’ OD fits right into the 22.2mm clamps, so you can keep everything on the base bar and make the extensions as long and bendy as you like. Aluminum 6063 is generally strong enough for aero extensions and able to be bent with a handheld pipe bender. Something like 6061 or 7005 is stronger but can be a pain to bend.

Look at Rudy Von Berg’s bike.he reversed 51 Speedshop’s aerobars and they are pretty high. I thought that was very interesting configuration but when he rides, it looks very comfortable for him.

This guy has a decent set up, but like he alludes to, it’s not perfect. Worth speeding through the clip to get to where he starts to talk about his bike tho. The UK time trialling scene seems to have a lot of cottage industries supporting riders to get the most out of their bikes.

Felt Dagger Stem
Zipp Vuka Base Bar with Tilt
D2Z extensions
51SS arm cups
Cee Gees pads

Works perfect for me

That setup looks brilliant!

I have a Felt IA FRD 2014 model, and i am in the same situation, i need a longer stem.

The problem is that this bike has an integrated stem. So if I go for Felt Dagger Stem (non-integrated), I have to change to a 31.8 base bar. OK, i will do that.

However, Felt Dagger Stem i don’t find it on stock in Europe.

Therefore i am looking to purchase a different stem. Maybe something like: https://www.pro-bikegear.com/...sile-evo-carbon-stem

Do you think this will fit the Felt IA FRD 2014? Has anyone else used a different stem on their Felt IA FRD ?

Or what other options to going for a longer stem on such a frame?

Thank you!

pro is a terrible stem. forced cable exit out the bottom. it won’t work well with your bike.

I will have adapter to offer tilt and my csr+ next year if your in no rush.

do you need more reach on brakes or just your arm pads further forward. my tilt is -4 to +24 degrees

More reach for extension bars and arm pads.

Breaking levers are just fine on the current base bar, which i wouldn’t like to spend more money for a new one, but it seems i can’t get my hands on a longer integrated stem for this model.

OK, i can wait, that’s not a problem it all depends when exactly next year is going to be ready, if it’s late summer, then maybe would be a little bit too late, haha.

Thank you!
