Felt DA1/DA2, Right bike size. Urgent!

Hi guys and girls!

I have a really urgent question about the right bike size for me and my mother. Because we have NO DEALER for our wish-bikes in our region (this 2 bikes are even not available here… grrrrr), we have to find the right bike size online… and we have to order this week (in an other country)! So please help us!!!

My mother:

  • Felt DA2 2012
  • height: 172cm, inside leg: 79-80cm
  • actually has a Scott Plasma Ltd. 2008, size M
  • she once sat on a Felt B2 in size 52 and i think it was good
  • the sizing-table says 51 or 54. big difference, isn’t it?

Me:

  • Felt DA1, 2012
  • height: 191cm, inside leg: 93cm
  • actually Felt B2 Pro 2010, size 60
  • i think size 58 of the new DA should fit

Any help would be very appreciated! Thanks a lot in advance!!!

Thomas

P.S.: please don’t tell us to go to a retailer… i know this would be best, but it’s really not possible here!

HI,
Owner of a 2009 B2pro and now a 2010 DA, I would say you should lean toward the smaller side of the measurements. I have found that, at least with my body type, Felt’s upper end bikes run bigger then other companies. I know this sounds weird, but I ride a very aggressive position and find their later model bikes to be more compact, but still a 54cm DA is “bigger” then say a 54cm BMC Airfoil. Just a thought…

Have you tried using an online fit guide?

If you’ve never sat on or ridden these bikes, how do you know they’re your “dream bikes”?

Does buying from “overseas” mean you’re getting these from a bike shop in Indonesia? If so, you’re gonna get ripped off; Felt does not allow retailers to ship bikes

I’m not sure that is the case regarding the shipping. I’ve never had a new biked shipped directly to me, but I have a lot of dealings with Felt personnel as well as my local dealer and shipping has been offered to me various times. Both to my home and to race venues.

But, I do agree with Michael about the fit though… the DA may look cool and have a great rep., but don’t buy them just because of that. You have to ride a TT style frame before you buy it. They are all very different. I would also contact Felt to find out if the entity you are dealing with is actually a vender/retailer. Don’t get scammed!

fyi

i am 178cm (long legs short torso and turtle back) and 54 is slightly too long for me - ie with shortest stem i have to have pads behind the basebar

thing to note - 51 is 650 if i remember correctly - thing to consider

for yourself since you already riding felt you can compate geometry onthe website - they have full spec
.

Thanks for your answers!

I’m not from the USA, so “an other country” is not overseas… I’ll have to buy in Germany, but I’m from the Principality of Liechtenstein (next to Switzerland). In Liechtenstein/Switzerland the DA1 and the DA2 are not available! I don’t understand why, but it is as it is…

This are our dream bikes because I acutally have my 4th Felt Tria Bike (2x DA, 1x B2 Pro, 1x B12) and I’ve been very happy with them. And we saw the new ones at the Interbike exhibition in Germany. Just for your information: in Switzerland it’s almost impossible to test ride tria-bikes, because they are not available for testing. It might be in other regions (e.g. the USA) where you have huge bike stores, but not here. You can be happy if they have 1-2 tria bikes in the showroom… and then only in size M. And normally only lower price models. The market is just too small. Conclusion: I have to inform myself in the internet and just order. That’s also the reason why I never changed the brand. No dealer would order one for me to have a look at it. It’s also not easy with cycling-shoes because I have size 14 and it’s too risky for the dealer to have one pair in his shop.

So, any help about the SIZE would be very useful. The other things are worthless to discuss, because I can’t change the facts.

Thanks for the link! My problem with these kind of links is, that I’m really “frightened” about the amount of different geometries of all the bikes. I just don’t know if I could compare them correctly. But I’ll sure have a look at it.

Addition:

  • I KNOW that it is an official Felt-Dealer (already ordered there and picked it up myself), but it’s just not close to me. That’s the point.
  • I contacted FELT on monday but did not get any answer until now! → not the first time that FELT doesn’t answer… btw…

Felt says: 650c x 47cm, 700c x 51cm, 54cm, 56cm, 58cm ← so it should come with the “regular” rims, right?

Thank you very much for your data! Are you riding the “new”-frame of the DA? I also think that my mother should take the 51. The felt-website says 51 - 54. For myself I’m quite sure that I should take 58, because there’s no 60 and 56 would probably be too small because I have long legs. I’m riding my actual B2Pro with the shortest stem, but the seatpost is over the max (about 1.5cm).

I tried to compare the 2007 Scott Plasma Ltd in size M to the Felt DA, but honestly I don’t understand it… they are absolutely different… and I don’t have the experience for that :frowning:

no i am riding felt 2010 …

but as said u can compare the numbers in the GEOMETRY sections for the both bikes. You have to be careful though your seatpost position vs BB shouldnt change between the bikes

and yes you are right seems like the new version is 700

When in doubt, go smaller. You can get a longer stem, us a couple more spacers, raise the seat (all within reason of course). If the frame is too big, you don’t have ANY choices.

From ST stack and reach tables. Very easy.

Scott Plasma in Size Medium
Stack: 52.7
Reach: 40.4

2012 DA 2 in Size 54
Stack: 52.4
Reach: 40.9

Looks pretty good.

I really don’t understand why people don’t use these.

Thanks for all posts!

Acutally I think the 51 would be the better fit. No one told me “51 ist too small”, but some told me “54 is too big” (seems as there are some people (men) riding a 54 with a height of 180cm).

Now also Felt answered and asked for some measurements. So here they are:

  • BB - top of saddle: 70cm
  • Tip of the saddle - end of extensions: 72.4cm
  • drop is 14cm (top of the middle of the saddle to the upperside of the basebar (The armrests are directly on the handlebar/no spacers)

On the plasma my mother feels well, but doesn’t want to be more stretched!

Thanks!

please note differences in morphology - i ahve pretty short torso and additionally ride with a turtleback not straight … which makes tall and short bikes better for me

your mother can be the opposite

Anybody know when the 2012 Felts arrive in Australia?

Everyone else is wrong. You are a half cm from an exact match between the two bikes which is fixed with a slightly shorter stem.

The biggest bike will be more aero and faster with the same comfort.

Always fill the space with frame. Not spacers or seatpost.

I’m going crazy…

This is what Felt answered (after sending some pics):

“I think she could actually use either the 51cm or 54cm DA, but I think the 51cm DA would be the better fit. It is about 13mm shorter in reach than her current Plasma, which will make it easy to replicate her position without having to slide the saddle all the way forward. The stack on the 51cm DA is 8mm taller, which will allow a similar saddle-bar drop, but without using a lot of spacers or angle on the stem.”

That probably isn’t the best example of a “perfect” fit. The saddle is quite tilted making the pelvic placement imprecise. The seat is too high (really!). It appears as though the Profile bars have a substantial amount of pad behind the stem and base bar, too. DEVOX bars mount the arm rest on top of the base bars.
