Felt B2 W/out Bayonet fork

Anybody had any luck with subbing a standard Felt fork on a B2 instead of the bayonet fork?

can anybody help me with this?

Don’t be afraid to give it some time. Some people are dealing with those distractions from tri known as “work”, and I bet one or two people on the board is actually training.

Unfortunately, I’ve got no advice, but… why would you want to? the fork - stem - headtube interaction has been proven to be very fast.

can anybody help me with this?

The 2007 B2 came with an Easton EC90 Aero fork. You can install any 1" steerer tube fork in the frame, including a Bayonet 1 or Bayonet 2.

Dave, Thanks for the info. I actually work in a shop that just took on Felt as an add in to our line up (really like the Tri bikes and the BMX bikes did great at Christmas) but didn’t have an answer for a customer who found a B2 on the net set up w/ a standard fork. Just wanted to make sure it would work for him (rather sell him a new B2 though)
BTW are you the same Super Dave who used to work with John Cobb in Shreveport at Bicycle Sports?

I have a 2007 B2 with a Easton EC90 Aero fork which i installed myself. Standard job - just like all other bikes with integrated headsets

SuperDave - additional question: can the new lower stembase for the latest Bayonet II fork be installed on a Bayonet I/SL fork ?
Found one and thinking of switching out the Easton for the proper fork instead, but I need the low stembase model.

I have a 2008 B2 Pro frame with a standard EA90 fork. It works fine.

The new stem system could be adapted to the Bayonet1, but not with stock parts.

The DEVOX Bayonet2 complete fork is now available aftermarket though.

Thanks - I got the fork today - “says Bayonet SL”, so i guess it is a model I.

Can you advice which non-stock parts I will need ?

SuperDave,

Can you verify that the DEVOX Bayonet2 is compatible with an '08 B12? And that clearance for a HED C2 (wide) isn’t an issue? Thanks!

Cheers,
-Dave

I have an 09 B12, and the thought of doing the Devox aftermarket Bayonet fork is tempting, but it’s just too much money. For my original cost of the B12 plus the price of the fork, I could have just gotten a B2 already at that price.

I suppose hindsight, and budget, is 20/20. Now I just need people to start upgrading their forks so I can get a used one…

Hmm, how much would a person pay for a Bayonet 1 fork?

It is a big job, the fork needs to be cut down an custom hardware is needed to mate the new top crown with the old compression device.

I could show you a photo I suppose…

You’ll need a machinist.

Yes, it fits, the B12 is the same frame shape as the DA. HED C2 clearance is no problem, select the right tire (<26mm) and brake caliper.

SuperDave - Thanks.

I think I will pass on the machinist and just see if i can get the standard stembase to work work me instead, before I end up destroying the fork in the process.

I just need a new stem and spline as far as i can see on the instructions. The former owner could not get it to work as it was delivered from the dealer with what I think is a 2008 stembase with 2007 stem/splines that are not compatible.

I certainly can’t speak for all ‘persons’ but for me of course there would be a variety of factors. The age and condition of the fork would be important, I’d consider the model year more given the problems that were reported in the first generation forks and resolved in subsequent years.

For me personally, I have to weigh the cost/benefits of the upgrade and the cost of the original Bayonet as part of the MSRP of the bike. The difference between the 09 B12 and B2 was about 700 dollars, which gets you a bayonet, lighter CF in the frame, DA components, different crank, etc. It’s hard to really attribute how much of that accounts for the cost of the Bayonet over the TTR fork on the B12, but its not a huge number.

Thinking about all of that, 500 for a used fork seems like it wouldn’t be a good ROI (to me, subjectively), so throwing out a number I’d probably pull the trigger on one around $300 but I forsee Bayonet owners hoping to get more than that. I’m just not in that big of a hurry.

My old 08 B2 with Easton Aero fork. It was quite easy to do, installed myself.

Thanks everyone for the help-it’s much appreciated.

Any chance you, or anybody else here have their own bayonet fork they want to sell? I have an 07’ B2 that came with the Easton fork and I would like to try the bayonet.
