From the Feed Zone Portables book I like the Egg Souffle and the Ham/Pineapple rice cakes. Both seem to have a long fridge life and they don’t get nasty in your pocket out on a ride.
That’s good to know about the ham & pineapple rice cakes, since those sound pretty good to me.
Look up Allen Lim rice cakes
.
I received the book yesterday and was drooling over many of the delicious (and easy sounding) recipies. Just wondered if anyone had any favorites and what experiences they had with them on rides.
Cinnamon roll and the egg souffle are really good.
I like the cinnamon apple rice cakes and the cherry chocolate sticky bites, both have high moisture content. I am going to use the sticky bite to fuel my endurance mountain bike race and a half Iron tri. I can shove it in my mouth quickly, and it is pretty close to a gel in calories and carbs. I guess I could cut the rice cake portion in half and it would be almost the same nutritionally, but I still like the sticky bite because everything except a little salt is folded into the mix. I’d rather have something that is easy to handle and not topped with anything when I need to eat quickly.
I have had this book and the prior one for a while now. I’ve done a few of the recipes, especially the GF ones as my wife has a weird exercise induced hive reaction every now and then when she has had wheat prior to the exercise. The rice based muffins are a bit hard to get totally right and I haven’t had great results with those, but the rice cakes are great. The bread pudding was also tasty, although I haven’t used it for ride food yet.
Basically for the rice cakes I have made my own versions, most notably mixing in cinnamon sugar (kinda like the apple cinnamon rice cake) with the rice. That was a fairly large part of my wife’s nutrition for a 24 hour race. Other combinations I’ve done are chopped strawberries, raspberries+chocolate, dark chocolate.
Having the same flavor for a full bike of an Ironman does get a little boring, but for me the lack of side effects for the run (no GI issues for me) is more than worth it. Another downside is the size of cakes needed to make up the calories for your ride. Lastly, it does require being able to make them fairly close to the race, which has hampered my ability to do the egg + bacon rice cakes as I simply did not have the tools required to do those far from home.
So far I’ve used it for two Ironman races this year, IMCDA and just this weekend IMCPH, and I’m really happy with the results from those events - first 2 hours off of my PR, second additional 46 minutes off of that. Yes, obviously a lot of training went into that, but I feel like I have to worry a little less about relying on clif bars or the like for my nutrition.
During the winter is the only time my stomach can take real food. I will do half a turkey sandwhich or something similar. Sometimes I will have pound cake or fruitcake depending on the time of winter. I like to buy stroopwafels from ilovestroopwafels.com and eat those on the bike. Such and amazing treat when out riding, also great when dipped in hot chocolate post-ride.
I was so lucky to have freshly made stroopwafels from a cart in Amsterdam…gawd they were delicious!
