IMO, it’s dangerous to ride on the roads with headphones since you can’t hear the traffic coming up behind you. Just my $0.02 but I have managed to avoid a few crashes cause I heard something weird, looked back, then moved out of the way. I’ve still crashed around 15 times in 27 yrs but less than if had been wearing headphones.

How loud do you listen to headphones? I can still hold a conversation while listening because I keep the volume lower. I can still hear traffic too.

You must be riding slow if the wind isn’t drowning out the sound of cars.

See your point, guess I’ve always had them up high enough to block everything else out, which has always been the point for me. That said, I would think you could hear the traffic better w/o them. Also, I have a pretty good ability to just sing songs to myself when swimming or biking long, so that’s what I do. One less piece of equipment to worry about:)

Regular cars, ya, they come up on me suddenly even w/o headphones, but not the 18-wheelers, they can be pretty loud. Also, some sports cars are pretty loud, espec “muscle cars”.
Also, FWIW, I think a lot of people new to the sport just do not realize how dangerous cycling is. I’ve always gotten back on the bike, but in 27 yrs of riding I’ve had about 15 crashes, 5/15 sent me to the ER, and in 3/5 they kept me in the hosp for 1-3 nights. I’ve broken or cracked about 10 or 11 bones and was knocked out for 45 min once. Really, you have to careful on the bike.
I’m sure I’ll get some folks who say 15 in 27 yrs is low but, compared to alternative sports like swimming and running, cycling is WAY more dangerous. Sure it’s fun but still.

What I meant was I’m sure that there are some pure cyclists on ST who would say 15 crashes in 27 yrs is not that bad, only 1 every 2 yrs or so. I know how it is on ST:)
I gather that you might think my crash/yr average is high???

Let’s put it this way…don’t ask me to ride with you anytime soon.

Well, ironically 2 or 3 of my worst came from just trying to go fast, down hills and around corners. And, looking at the positive side, I have gotten back on the bike time and again.
